Hi, everyone!

I would like to introduce my one of project for APPLEII.
I built the SD DISKII Emulator and testing as under.
It using SD memory card and sub directory support and can change to another DISK while using APPLEII system.
It emulate two DISKII driver. so, can copy each other even format is working.
It is using NIB files from SD memory card.
It could be one of good stuff for all of APPLEII lovers.
Pls check the link.
Sorry for Korean letter but, you could watch the movie how does it work.

Hi Ian,

Do you plan to offer these for sale? If so, what is your price?

Regards,

Bill

Hi Bill,
a couple of days ago Koichi Nishida put some info about his SDISK II in the Apple II Enthusiasts Facebook group. It seems to have a similar purpose as the project above but in a more compact package.
Nishida san has already ordered new PCBs and I'm sure he'll be happy to sell you one. Take a look at his page.

http://tulip-house.ddo.jp/DIGITAL/english.html

You can ask him about shipping costs and further details through e-mail.

I assume that the NIC files he refers to are .nib files, right?

Yes, he refer to NIB file and convert it to NIC but only one file can use in a SD card.
but, mine is slot type and use NIB file direct and could select file among a lots of files when user wants.
it can support FAT32 and even sub directory. hence can use above 16GB SD card with tons of NIB files.
I've tested 16GB what I have and working great.
Thanks

Hi Ian, I really like your approach. The use of a moderately cheap ATMega is a good choice and 4Mbit of cache is crazy ;-). Are you planning to make the design public? I think it would be interesting to have an universal design for the ATMega, that could be adapted to several tasks. Making a Mockingboard compatible soundcard for example. There are several cheap sound-ICs from the 80s out there, that would make a good addition to the A2. The RS232-Terminal Interface on the Disk II emulator is a cool idea as well. There are so much possibilities for a Card like that.

Think of combined Ethernet, Sound and Floppy emulation on a single card!

And, as usual, if one makes such a card, add the useful $100 bytes in the $Cx00..$CxFF space to it to be recognized and drivers written for it. Otherwise, it will be unmanageable,

Great work Ian. Keep us posted.

And I agree with Antoine. Follow the standard for identifying the card at $Cx00 so it can be supported properly.

Thanks for your comments,
4Mbits cache is really big size but, it is good for emulate DOS3.3.
It emulate Read/Write even format under DOS3.3.
Now, It starts to emulate the PRODOS HDD(32MB) with great speed of Read/Write.
it can load standard *.hdv HDD images and can swap any time(except writing)and support 2 virtual drives concurrent.

You can see some working movie in here

I applied a cache concept into my SD DISKII Emulator.
Now, it is working with cache memory and recurrent reading or writing is storing into cache and doing as expected.
For example, When I type "catalog" , it reads some blocks frequently and cache works really very helpful for same jobs . AVR controller giving data from cache not from SD media again and it result good speed.
And writing cache also nice, it looks better than reading. it took shorter time than reading file. ofcouse, it need some behind writing process by AVR. ^^
Reding cache size is about 250KBytes and Writing cache 190KB(sharing with reading cache) per a DISK(it support 2HDD emulation).

It can achieve faster reading and writes.
For example, rebooting takes 1.4sec(Prodos 2.0.3). and 32KB re-loading file it takes less than 0.9 sec. it will improve some more after tuning it.

You can see some some more in here.(Sorry for Korean, I will prepare for the English)

Yes, I saw it, He did very good job.

Before to decide build my own emulator, I tried to understand his project but, I don't know about the CLPD and some more..but, his general idea was very good and helpful.

My emulator can wirte on NIB mode and even disk format is working fine.
The writing function is very important. it allow play more types of games and ap
plications.(such as the Ultima series, it required saving data to keep play.)

And the format function, it makes me feel much more as real one as I have real two FDDs with blank disks, can format several types of OS with new virtual blank disks.

My emulator can select image file with a DIAL and button and it will have a small
LCD for image file select and for other conditions, you can choose any image file even 32MB Hard disk image could be selected.
it allow unlimitted 32MB Hard disks on your SD card.

It was tested under FAT32 with 16G SDHC SD and several level of sub directories.

it can read several copy protected images(Not all)

It support read/write cache(total 512KB) and It makes the APPLE2 to work faster and will help to avoid the wearout on your SD memory card.

I will prepare some english web link for eveyone to understand more.

Thank you,
ian.

The really cool thing is, that you can do a serial terminal loopback connection on the A2 itself and select the disk-images from the A2 via a SSC RS232 connection. If the ATMega offers Ethernet :-P you could do something like the Apple-Pi.
http://schmenk.is-a-geek.com/wordpress/?p=88

If combined with a onboard serial interface directly connected to the A2-Bus and an ethernet (SPI or 8bit) interface on the ATMega side, you would have a very universal interface. The best thing is, that there are more potent MTMega, that would allow you to further expand the features of the Expansion Board without completely redoing your Programming.

If you look at SPVHD there is even a Smartport implementation for the AVR platform. And i know of a german developer who realized the functionality of the LIRON (Smartport) Controller in an AVR based Card. Wouldn't it be nice, if you could directly connect a 3.5" and 5.25" floppy drive to the card ;-))

I think i would be more than happy if i had a card like yours (in its current state) besides my CFFA3000.

Now, It start to support special command mode.
I can change disk on APPLE2 side on Prodos HDV and DOS3.3 NIB mode too.
I need some more job for better stable work.

So, now I can replace to another Disk on APPLE Soft basic and small ASM routine.
It may helpful for some users.
Thanks;

Thanks for your concern,
Due to some inconveniences, I've just convert it to PDF format.
And the movie files, Maybe the Youtube is the better place to show how it works.
I will prepare some files for all of you.
Thanks

Have you considered using this (ESP8266 Serial WIFI Wireless Transceiver
Module) instead of BT?

I just checked ESP8266 module and orders some,
I will test this module after receive it.
Maybe I can apply it with emulator and may extend the connection to worldwide.
Thanks for the information.

Its a 3.3V device that is not 5V tolerant. you will have to use a level shifter and supply a 3.3V power supply.

Ian,
I am one of the lucky ones that got one of the boards off of Ebay #48 On the Select-wheel board there is a 3 pin header for an LCD - You state 5V Gnd and Serial -- What speed is this data and which serial LCD were you planning to use? I have a few 2x16 and 4x20's around here, But just thought I would ask before I just hook one up.. Thank you for the time you have put into this board..

Thanks for purchasing, ^^;
Extra 3pins have same speed as serial port so 115200bps, 8bits, and no parity.

Thanks

Hi Ian Kim

you should redesign the external controller. Its very hard to put it into a case together with a LCD.
I will have to desolder the buttons and LEDs to be able to use them in the case.

You should add a mot hod t configure the baud rate of the serial for the LCD. 115200 baud is a bit much and only a few serial LCDs support that. The most common rate is 9600...

The Bluetooth interface is a bit wide and interferes with other cards that are besides it as does the battery (but not that much).

The limitation to NIB and HDV image files could be expanded to use DSK and 2mg images files as well.

Otherwise the card is very useful and is worth every penny ;-)

I have No. 50 and 51 that means that Ian Kim has made at least 49 other cards he has sold ... most likely in South Korea.

Some first impressions of the cards:
Card No50 does not recognize NIB and DSK images, only HDV.
Card No51 works correctly.

The Bluetooth dongles have stopped working after about 4 hours
(there was written something about a capacitor needing to be emptied somewhere)

The card behaves rather strange if an accelerator is used and cannot be used in a 'fast' slot.

It is slower than the CFFA3000 but faster than a real floppy.

The board layout is not optimal and could be simplified in several locations (an auto-router was used?). The placement of the (serial) expansion connectors could have been more thought through. The external controller works good but has the same kind of 'misplaced' components as the main card. Instead of the rotary encoder i would rather like to have a simple up/down/enter/exit arrangement maybe combined with a 2 Line 20 char display (there are some arduino shields like that).

Mapping the emulated drives to another slot seems not to be possible (or i haven't found the function).

Conclusion: (so far)
The SD DiskII offers up to 2 emulated Drives i the same slot the card resides in with reasonable speed. The price seems a bit high for what is currently offered in comparison to the CFFA3000 but there is room for later updates which can add features. All this taken together leaves the impression of a work in progress. Right now i would recommend the card to people who have some deeper knowledge of electronics or can't wait for the next batch of the CFFA3000. I am interested to see what will come next ;-)

@Ian Kim: All this is meant as constructive criticism and can in parts be seen as nitpicking.
Most things i mentioned can be solved by a updated firmware.
Keep up the good work!

Dear Jonas,

The external controller designed to use as it. if you want make own case, maybe need some of modification.
Serial speed have 115200bps. it's fast but if reduce lower speed as 9600, it may loss some of data while emulate FDD. I will check it if I could improve it.

Most of users using only one board without bluetooth dongle, I will consider it to reduce the thickness.

Due to I'm not so familiar in English so, I may not understand correctly what you mentioned, if you need more explanation or any question, please send email me.

Thanks

Dear Jonas,
I've tested all card before to send but, I'm no sure what is wrong. I will send email to solve it.
Just I guess that if your APPLE2 is for PAL monitor not NTSC.

And Do you have issues on both bluetooth dongle?

SD DISK][ Emulator isn't considered work with accelerator card, sorry, I don't have accelerator and disn't considered it. Due to timing different, It may not work properly.
But, I tested it with laser128 EX (Faster speed)version, it works fine there.
I don't know if I could apply for different I/O speed slot.

The board layout,
Yes, it needs more improvement as you mentioned.
And rotary encoder, I like it than button, it is good for file selection and load maybe simple button type also could be an option.

External LCD, It need to make. I planed but, don't progress much.

And DISK mapping,
It wasn't design for mapping way. sorry for it.

And I didn't think it is only good for who having deeper knowledge of electronics. if it looks complicated for general APPLE2 lovers, I have to make more simple.

I feel as received a lots of homework :)

Thanks for your comments and concern.
