Thanks everyone for the suggestions.

I ruled out real ram problems since it was only mail that crashed,
and when I re-initialized it everything was fine.

It appears that the problem was a corrupted Envelope Index file.

I copied my old ~users/me/library/mail folder back, and returned the
old mail.plist. Deleted the Envelope Index file. It rebuilt the file
on relaunch and it appears that everything is back and working fine.

Thanks again for the help, and this trick goes into my pile of early
step, non destructive, repairs.
