Hi,
I put my G5 tower in storage for 7 months while I was away. I'm back now
and when I attempted to power on the machine, it is dead as a doorstop. No
power LED, no fan spinning - absolutely dead. I tried different power
cables, confirmed wall power receptacle is good, still no go. BTW the
machine had absolutely no issues prior to storage. Please help.
Cheers, Les

The 3.6 volt lithium battery which is used to retain the contents of the
CMOS over time may have run out of life.

It is a special lithium battery which is trickle-charged by the machine's
PSU when it is not in use.

If stored away for a long time, without being plugged into the wall, the
self-resistance of the battery will cause it to drain down towards zero.
The machine will seldom start with a drained-down battery.

Also, the cell is nominally 3.6 volts (nameplate), but it is usually 3.68
volts, when new, and it retains voltage that for quite a long time.

Such batteries are considered "dead" when the voltage reaches 3.2 volts,
but many machines will still work properly, although not with 100 percent
reliability, when the battery reaches 3.0 volts. Below 3.0 volts should be
considered "really and truly dead".

Every battery company seems to make these 1/2 AA lithium batteries.

You can get them for $5 or so at Radio Shack.

Good "pulls", from used Macs, at electronics recyclers, can also give a
decent battery for about $1.

It seems unlikely, but maybe in the meantime the CMOS battery is dead and
this has somethign to do with your problem.
Wait to hear from different users, but you could try replacing it, and see
it anything changes. At least it's a cheap try. :-)

See this guy who did lots of attempts, and it was the batter from the
start...

Almost certainly your PRAM battery is dead; this can cause issues like this.

This is Apple's guide: <http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/PMG5_Battery_DIY.pdf> which shows what looks like a CR3032-type button cell, but iFixit has photos of a motherboard showing a half-aa Lithium 3.6V cell < http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Installing+Power+Mac+G5+Backup+B attery/1951/1>

In any case it's simple enough to find and identify which is which on your system. The button cell can be gotten just about anywhere (I usually get them at Walgreens), the ½AA one can begotten at RadioShack, places like Batteries Plus or online.

Most legacy Macs have a 1/2 AA.

Most legacy PCs have a CR2032.

Different iterations of the PowerMac G5 have either a CR2032 or a 1/2 AA,
best bet is to open it up and look inside.

Most of the Apple service manuals I've read say the 1/2 AA is good down to
2.8 V.

I'm pretty sure the lithium batteries (both CR2032 and 1/2 AA) are primary
cells, and attempting to recharge them is not a good idea. I've never heard
of any computers or other electronics that use CMOS/PRAM/holdup batteries
that recharge their lithium cells.

You are right both that the listed batteries are primary cells and that charging them is "BAD".

The PSU takes over for the battery when the machine is on but in most cases it doesn't charge them.

Some Powerbooks did use rechargable Li cells for the PRAM battery.

With it unplugged press and hold the CUDA switch for 10 secs that may
get it to boot,
The battery does not have to be in these machines to boot, at least
not in any of mine.

Bruce, John, Valter, PH and all others that replied, many thanks. I had a
spare battery lying around, so replaced it and pressed the SMU/CUDA once
and the machine sprang to life. Many thanks, all
