"New guy on the block": have you tried ecosia.org? I stopped using Google
(GMail and Google Groups, and YouTube, I almost forgot, should be
enough...) except for images. Also, if you're not satisfied with the Ecosia
results, it's just one click to redo the search with Google or other search
engines.

I feel sad about this, I remember it well. There are lots of old adverts in
early issues of Wired for search engines and the like... "Oh Hotbot... you
found it!"

I remember being thrilled because AltaVista actually gave sensible results instead of returning anything vaguely related to the topic at hand, and showing it off again and again.
DDG is great. I've been using it for over a year now; the bang feature is pretty awesome. You can preface a search with "!yt" (no quotes) to direct it to YouTube, for example, and there are hundreds of them. They have a short url at ddg.gg if you don't want to type out the whole thing.
