A guy from Electronic News called me today to ask about the AT's disk
problems. ("Of course I'm sure, I read it in Usenet.") He reports that
IBM expects to make a statement about AT reliability next Friday the 21st.
There are also claims that tens of thousands of disk drives have been sent
back to the manufacturers, but I can't give a whole lot of credence to
that, especially since most of the trouble I've seen has been with disk
controllers, not drives.
It is true that IBM's hot line for large corporate customers has been
censoring questions about AT reliability from their bulletin board, so
something peculiar is going on. I can't wait to hear what they say.
