Has anyone out there written a device driver that would allow printed
output (LPT1:) to be directed to a serial printer AND would then pace
the output with the ETX/ACK protocol?

I have a Diablo 1620 printer hooked up to the serial port of my compaq,
and it works fine with Wordstar at 1200 baud because I can make Worstar
use the ETX/ACK protocol. I'd like to be able to use DOS 2.0's print
spooler, but when I redirect parallel output to the printer, the printer
buffer overflows.

This printer won't use any protocol other than ETX/ACK. When I bought
new ROM's that would add XON/XOFF protocol, and also a hardwired
protocol using DTR, Wordstar stopped printing correctly.

We also have diablo's connected to PC's. The way we do it is to get
an astclock card (good because it has more RAM, DAY/DATE CLOCK, and
SERIAL, PARALLEL,...). Then use the superspool program and set
the mode to use XON/XOFF (which is what we use) and it works great.
No problems. If you want to buffer you lpt1: which might be parallel,
then just get one of the many public domain spoolers and away you
go.
