Subject: anybody got the PCE flash card from Tototek.com?

Hey, List...

I've ordered this card from Tototek.com, and I've a question for anyone with a
little more electronic expertise than me (which wouldn't be hard, lemme tell
ya!)

On Tototek's website, they say that you need a straight-through parallel cable
(check), and they say that you need a USB port for power while transferring
data from the computer to the card. They say that the USB port must be +5 volts
or you could damage the card. I've verified my parallel cord just to make sure,
and I've tried checking voltage coming from my USB ports on my laptop, however,
everytime I insert my multimeter's probe into the laptop, it just shuts off. Is
there any way to properly measure the voltage coming from my laptop's USB? I've
tried looking in HP's tech docs for the Pavilion N54xx series, but can find
nothing on voltages.

Any ideas would help - I can't afford to blow out my card ($130 isn't cheap!)
and I can't wait to try out some of the homebrew stuff on my TG16/CD system!
Emulation is great, but it just isn't the same, ya know?

Thanks in advance for any help you guys can provide!

David

Well, if I'm not mistaken, I believe that USB is 5v by default. I've never
measured it with a voltmeter or anything, but that's what I've always heard.

Also, I know that a lot of the folks who do controller and case hacking will
borrow the +5v power from the USB ports to power controllers - for example
original NES controllers can be used through the parallel port, but you need
to provide +5v which you can steal from one of your molex connectors from
your power supply, or you can get it from the USB port. I've done this by
stealing from a spare molex, but I know of others who have stolen from the
USB ports.
