We are considering buying a PC-Clone from a California company
called IBS. I think they are just a system house, not a real
manufacturer of components. They use the Faraday motherboard,
with 256K maximum onboard RAM. I think the floppy and color
video controller are from Faraday also. The keyboard is the
nice Keytronics board, with much better layout than Big Blue.
They also have an add-on winchester and controller. The disk
is Miniscribe, and the controller is from DTC. The floppies in
the system are TEAC, half-high DSDD. The standard power supply
is 67W, but a 100W supply is only $30 extra. I suppose the
latter is a good investment, if I get the winchester.
I am familiar with Miniscribe and Teac. Both seem to make a
quality product. The same for DTC, except I've only seen their
SASI controllers, not PC stuff. I've heard good things about
Faraday also. We would appreciate any information you could
give us regrading the components, system, or the company itself.
Compatibility information is of major interest. They are selling
the PC with 2 floppies, keyboard, video card (no monitor) for $1150.
The winchester & controller for another $735. There is a major
catch: you have to buy 2 or more systems. No problem there. Is
this deal a winner?
