i'm thinking of trying to increase the memory on my commodore 64.
i would like to do this myself. what is involved in this? can
i just replace the memory chips on the memory boards with higher
density chips? any leads would be appreciated.

thanks,
danny chen

Well, you won't be able to do it with ease... The 6510 processor
can only handle 64K of ROM and RAM combined (even though the
C64 has 64K of RAM and 20K of ROM, it only "sees" 64K of
both combined at a time). Richvale Electronics has an
add-on 68000 processor (a 16-bit, much more expensive and
not normally used in under-$500 micros) with memory expansion
to 512K, but it costs quite a bit (not sure of precise amount).
The other option is to have the memory "banked" in and out,
so that the 6510 chip still only "sees" 64K at a time, but
it is not very practical.
For more information, consult your local off-net guru.

;

There are some memory boards advertised in recent RUN magazine issues.

These work as RAMdisks with some software.
