I received 5 replies to my request for monitor recommendations for
an Atari 800: 3 firmly recommended Commodore, model 1702, because
it has separate luma and chroma inputs, 1 recommended an Amdek Color 1+,
and 1 recommended the Amdek Color 3+.

Thanks for everyone's input.  I'll probably buy the
Commodore 1702 for $247.93 and the proper cable for the Atari
for $9.95.

I looked at the Commodore monitor today at my friendly local Kmart;
used with a commodore 64 (I don't know if it has separate luminance and
chroma outputs) the flicker was UNBEARABLE.  I couldn't adjust it away...
Is this a problem with this monitor, or is the C64 not a good test machine
for it?  The sharpness was excellent, which leads me to believe that
the luma/chroma WAS separate.  If it weren't for the flicker, I would
consider one for use with my 800.

By the way, does the 1702 take standard composite video through the front
panel jack?  The salesperson was, ahem, not exactly on top of things.

As far as I can tell, this flicker isn't a common feature in any of the
several dozen 1702s I've seen, and is probably indicative of a faulty 
monitor, or rotten Commodore software.  Incidentally, per somebody's
previous question, the Commodore DOESN'T use the 9918.  This is fairly
obvious from the resolution of 256x192 for the 9918 vs 320x192 for 
Commodore's part, numbered something like the 6567-II.  

(the following is an editorial comment)
   Doesn't really matter, since I hate Commodore to the core.  (Of course
I do, I've got an apple.  And I'm just waiting for Tramiel's 68000 machine.)

And yes, the front jacks on the 1702 are in fact normal NTSC video.  And they
look wonderful plugged into a Betamax.
