Hi Eagan !
BTW, Congrats on the cool demo program you wrote for the PCE.

I thought that translating a few more of the special PCE RPG's would have
gone a long way:
Emerald Dragon
Ys 4
Legend of Xanadu
Far East of Eden

And I also thought that a couple of CD or SCD shooters would have helped too.

I think Langrisser would be a nice choice. We already have a full
translation in Warsong for the Sega Genesis. And, the game seems to already
have some nice English fonts in it.

Once Langrisser's done I think the next one that needs to be tackled is
Magicoal. A great two-player game which would be all the more enjoyable in
English. What a job, though!

Well,
Obviously what's missing here wasn;t missing in Japan. So the obvious
question would be what were the great games that sent PCE to the top over
there? I mean, I know waht my favorite imports are, but what were the big
ones over there?

Well...I don't know if an outpouring of RPGs would have been a good idea, as
RPGs were, at the time, sort of a niche thing in the U.S. Still, though, it
could have helped the Turbo build up some credibility in the states.
Honestly, though, I don't think much in the PC Engine library could have
helped either NEC or, later, Turbo Technologies compete against either the
Genesis or Super NES (game magazine "journalists" have proposed in the past
that Akumajo Dracula X and Street Fighter II could have turned everthing
around in the U.S.; however, that's pretty ignorant to make that
assumption...look at the poor Dreamcast and its library of games...a library
which certainly didn't help it in the long run. GameFan also stated that NEC
would have been in better shape over here had they brought out the
SuperGrafx...oh, yeah...that would've been a great idea...sarcasm). I love
the PC Engine library myself; however, much of the content was pretty
Japanese-centric. The system didn't have the types of sports and action
games that were "selling" the other systems in the U.S. (emphasis on sports
titles). There really needed to be more and higher quality CD action games
also...as opposed the typical sim, RPG and strategy stuff...games like Kaze
Kiri and Faussete Amour were not exactly cutting-edge action games at the
time of their release compared to standard action fare on other systems like
Contra III on Super NES and Gunstar Heroes on Genesis. Still, it would have
been nice if some developers had thrown the PC Engine a bone from time to
time (companies like Square, Enix, and Capcom, among others). However, they
were making their green with Nintendo on the Super Famicom, so there was
really no reason for them to stray. Capcom eventually strayed to support the
Mega Drive platform, yet probably the focus of the payoff on that move was
the money to be made in the U.S. market instead of on the floundering Mega
Drive. Unfortunately, we ended up with a bunch of licensed Capcom games
released...most in rather shoddy form...by NEC Avenue. Without starting a
rant on "who shoulda did what," though, I'll just give a short list
of...um...the top 15 games which I believe may have helped the Turbo's
position over here (either based on quality or name)...a "fantasy" list,
though, as both NEC and Turbo Technologies seemed to be unable to secure
licenses or make adequate decisions.

Akumajo Dracula X
Emerald Dragon
Garou Densetsu Special
Kaizou Ningen Shubibinman 3
Langrisser
Lemmings (don't laugh, it was a popular series...and the PCE port is actually
great)
Neo Nectaris
Puyo Puyo CD
Snatcher
Spriggan
Star Parodier
Street Fighter II
Tengai Makyo II
World Heroes 2
Ys IV: The Dawn of Ys

I agree with all of the titles that Grant listed. I'd also add:

Macross 2036 (you'd be surprised how many Robotech fans would've been dying
to get this)

Blood Gear (mechs, light sabers, various guns and tools of destruction,
large bosses, great cinemas - Americans would eat it up ^_^)

Legend of Xanadu I & II/Popful Mail (marketing would be the key here. With
Ys, Xanadu, Popful, Dungeon Explorer II, Neutopia, etc... could any system
even come close to the Turbo's action-RPGs?)

Fray~Xak Gaiden (a bit of a reach here, but Fray was the kind of cute,
adorable, memorable character that people could identify the system with)

Sylphia (another great shooter to add to the Turbo's already strong lineup)

Hi list, just put up my new FS page at
http://www.geocities.com/weapon_r_97/main.htm not really much there
at the moment, mainly more common stuff. In the future hopefully it
will grow quite a bit larger but it's a start. Check it out and lemme
know if interested in anything. Prices at this point are negotiable
as I'm trying to get rid of all this stuff and get some money coming
in to start stocking more sought after games.

Hi list, just located a few complete and mint Turbo Duo's w/ the Ys 1
& 2, and Gate of Thunder Packins, as well as a couple unopened Kisado
converters. Before I pick them up I wanna make sure I'll be able to
move them as it's a pretty costly investment if I can't get rid of
em. For the Duo's I'm really looking for around $200 each, and for
the Kisado's, I'm not too sure, so I'm taking offers on those. If
interest is shown in these I'll go ahead and pick them up so lemme
know soon if you are interested.

What exactly is an "unopened" Kisado? When I bought my Kisado (new) years
and years ago (before I gave in and just bought a Japanese Duo and
SuperGrafx...my U.S. system mainly collects dust now), it didn't have any
packaging. Hmmm...maybe there are collectors of sealed game converters as
well?

When I bought mine (probably 4 years ago), it came in a bag with an orange
cardboard tag stapled to the top of it. Same way they sell alot of misc
cables. If you didn't get that, perhaps you unknowingly got a used item.

Totally agree...I actually cut these two games off to pare the list down to
15. I think there were plenty of Robotech fans waiting for that game after
Turbo Technologies gave a release date (and magazines ran spreads on
it)...then abruptly cancelled it. Smooth move. Same goes for Gradius
II...magazines covered it in previews and it had a release date...then it was
suddenly cancelled. Gee...I know...but they gave up Terra Forming and Camp
California, didn't they? (gag) Fray (ported from the MSX) is a pretty
shameless rip on Namco's Valkyrie series (represented in fine fashion on
PlayStation via the Namco Museum and Namco Anthology series...too bad the PCE
game is rather so-so), but it's a really good game and one that U.S.
audiences could have really warmed to methinks.

 > Sylphia (another great shooter to add to the Turbo's already strong

I have to disagree with this one...I find it to be a pretty average shooter.
Unless there are many fans of Namco's Phelios around, I'm not sure many would
get the concept or be enthused to play such a drab and flat looking shmup. I
would've picked "no-brainers" like Gradius II, R-Type Complete CD, and Super
Raiden before tagging Sylphia. I'd me more inclined to personally want to
sub Psychic Storm for this game...a little slow moving with somewhat annoying
music and game-stopping morphs, but really a beautiful thing to behold and it
is rather fan at that.

Nope...I bought my ancient converter back when Kisados were in full
production through whatever the source used to be (it's been years), so there
wasn't a big used market because they were readily available (not like now).
Mine may have come in a bag...it was packaged in whatever it came in...it had
to have been disposable or I would have kept it. However, by unopened
(versus sealed), I was assuming we were talking about a box. And I know mine
didn't come in a box.

Actually, I should have previously mentioned "Valkyrie no Densetsu" - this
was the number one selling HuCard by a landslide on the PCE. A translation
of this would have been awesome.

In fact, a translation of this one even today would be pretty cool. :-)

Warning... my memory of the good ol' US 16bit days is probably inaccurate
in places because I was living in Japan during 8 and 16 bit eras.

Although my thoughts on this have most likely changed since before the PSX
showed up, I know I had some strong suggestions as to what should have
been released in the US.

Before SNES came out, I thought it was important for NEC to release arcade
titles since I think that's what was giving Sega more mindshare at least
initially. As for genres, I think TG-16/Duo needed more action and sports
titles. I believe the 16bit era really defined the importance of sports
titles for consoles in the US, so it was unfortunate that PCE lacked these.

Believe it or not, PCE has a bunch of arcade ports. If I'm not mistaken,
all of Namco's PCE releases were arcade ports. And of course all the
capcom and sega remakes were based off the arcade games. I think the US
got the lower end of the arcade ports. Ordyne!? Come on. I like Ordyne,
but they could have picked a better game. Speaking of choices, I think
Blazing Lasers woulda been a much better pack-in than Keith Courage. Once
Blazing Lasers started getting the great reviews, NEC should've replaced
Keith Courage.

Looking back at the PCE games that were out when the TG-16 debutted, I
think NEC picked the best of the lot. However, they didn't do such a good
job later on.

Well, i've rambled on too much already, so I'll just finish it up by
saying that TG-16 needed more action games, sports games, and any other
game that Sega had that was already on the PCE (Ys 3, Valis 3, etc)... Yes
I know these games where also released in the states. More importantly,
NEC needed 3rd party developers. Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter 2'
would have helped during the SNES vs Genesis versions of those games.

That's it for now. I'm sure I'll think of some other things after sending
this. :p
