Subject: Hu card converter...
Ok, I am sure we have all been over this topic before. But, I have to
bring this up.
I can't get over the demand there is for Hu Card converters (you know, to
play Japanese Hu cards on your US system). It seems every time I turn
arround, someone is asking me where they can get one. I don't really have
much to tell them.
I have learned recently that playthegames.com (I think) claims that they
will have NEW Kisado adapters soon. How they are getting these, I have no
idea... but they want $79 each... Hummm and I thought when I payed $30-$40
for mine it was expensive.
Now to my point.I have heard different things from different people... Some
say the guy who made the Kisados, can no longer make them because he can no
longer get the "Hu card slots..." or something along those lines. I have
seen just about every converter that has surfaced. I just don't understand
why someone can't make some new ones, and fairly cheaply. After all... any
part can be made right? Even though Hu Cards, and their slots are not
standard by any means, can't something else be "adapted" for our needs? I
can't help thinking, that if enough people put their heads together a new
converter could be made, and be sold for around the $40 price again.
Do share your thoughts....

The tooling costs to tool the plastic for the connector and then the
tooling to
form the pins will cost about US$10K. I have thought about doing this in a
factory
in China, but I don't have any assurances that I can even begin to recoup the
cash outlay.
After the tooling is completed, It would actually cost less than $25 to get
these into the country,
assuming that the shipment is around 5000 units.
If somebody is willing to collect and escrow the money and coordinate the many
potential customers of such a device, I would be willing to do the project
to make
these. I think a minimum of 2500 units need to be made to make this a
reality.

This sure would be cool. But I just would not know where to start on how to
get the money, plus my wife would not approve. (I know, she is crazy don't
you think?)
Now to find potential customers, that is different story. People would buy
them off my website. (ok, so thats not many) However, I bet if we spoke
with large online video game shops to see if they were interested in the
product... I am sure we could gather a lot of potential customers. I know
converters always go for over $100 each time one is placed on ebay. (if you
ever see one) so, the demand is there. How high of a demand? That is yet
to be seen. 2500 units does sound like a lot. How many USA systems were
manufactured anyway?

That would be a good place to start. NCS and Video Game Depot would be good
candidates.

TZD ONLY sells original merchandise, no boots, used, or unofficial
products. This falls under the heading of a boot+unofficial, so it
would not be appropriate to contact TZD.

I bought my kisado from them. They also used to sell a number of other
non-official converters, including the green diving board ones and a black
one that, while more aesthetically pleasing, sucked.

They currently, online, make a big fuss about not doing it. I wish they
did. They try to make it sound like a feature... "ALL OUR PRODUCTS
ARE NEW!" or something like that, but the truth is, and I admire them
for this... but the truth is that they're liquidating old stock, which
is certainly getting limited.

After working with Keith for years, I would assume DisKounters would
probably have an exclusive (hopefully) or be the primary source if such
an item ever was developed. We have worked hard to get the parts
needed to find out if it was possible to re-create such a converter (or
make a new one).
I would prefer TZD NOT to get them. At one point, they were nice with
us, but decided to cut us off and become extremely rude. I would
prefer to work with other companies that I can trust.
I also have had over 100 people contact me about such a product. I
have a list of emails (and still taking a list) for those wanting a
converter. BIG PROBLEM - most people told me they are ONLY WILLING TO
PAY $30, since that is what we were selling Kisados for. I even
mentioned to a few we were considering such a project, but once I said
the cost could be $50 - $75 due to our overhead costs, many complained
"but the kisado was only $30 so thats all I am willing to spend". Not
one person, but 15 - 20.
If people would be willing to stretch their pocket books to about
$50...it might be a little easier...but still tough. Again, costs must
be recovered...and it does not look like that will happen (at least
within a few YEARS).
Remember, Keith and I brought the list Turbo Slips that were virtually
identical to those original slips...and we have not covered costs from
that project.
Best bet is to get the word out...find out HOW MUCH and HOW MANY...I
would love to get emails from people telling me how much they are
willing to spend on a converter...and would continue compiling a list.
If the numbers get there, we might be able to order. After all, we are
collectors too, and it would be a nice addition to the TG hardware
lineup (10 years or so after the system was introduced).

What is a boot?
"Boot" is short for 'bootleg.' Something in the grey/black market.
