Hey, you guys left out this idea. A PC-Engine LT with the necessary adapters.
While were on the subject, how many list members have a pc-engine lt in
their collection?
Any impressions about the pc-engine duo monitor?
I know it has a 6" tft screen, how does it compare to the
turboexpress/pc-engine gt's screen?

I played a really weird game at Katsu Con. It was some Beta game that was
never realeased. Only the first stage was complete. It had the graphics
engine of Space Harrier and the Character Design of Fantasy Zone. Anyone
know anything about this game? What is it called? It was pretty kewl. How
hard is it to get ahold of this item?

BTW, Kevin? Stefan? Are either of you guys on this list?

It's called Space Fantasy Zone.
Full game was done AFAIK.

It got "leaked" onto the net a year or so back. Some list members had it and
were trying to sell it which pissed off other list members so someone just
posted it up. Check the list archives and I'm sure you'll find it.

Wouldn't it be neat if we could get these legal games and demos onto =
something that those of us who like using the real hardware could use to =
try these things out. Perhaps putting the space fantasy zone and the =
other demos on a CD to use in the duo and not some emu? Even a smallish =
run of hus would be cool and definitely worth my $.
Has anyone done this or is attempting to do this? =20

I've always wondered how much it would cost to do a run of HuCards. I mean
come on, they can't be as expensive as normal cartridges... there were all
sorts of homemade Atari carts, weren't there? I'd like to see some of the
games that people have made on their own in physical form, since I hate
playing games via e mulators.

Hmmm...
Space Fantasy Zone was a Super CDROM, not a HuCard.
All of the HuC demos can now be compiled into Super CDROM form, not just
run as a ROM image in an emulator. I have worked with Zeograd and David
Michel to make this a reality - and the quality of games and demos is
constantly improving. In fact, you can now create 'overlays' for CDROMs -
this is how you can tie several different programs together to make one
cohesive CDROM image (like the Ultrabox magazines).
I try to encourage the HuC developers to put source code on www.zeograd.com
for exactly this reason - so people can make a CDROM image if they want, or
alter it to suit their own tastes, and learn more about programming for the
PCE.
For HuCards:
Jerry DaSilva has the most experience with making HuCard-like PC Boards...
he made some development boards last year.
Cost breakdown for making HuCard:
1) $10 for HuCard board when done in batch of 100 pieces - probably closer
to $5 when done in batch of 500-1000 pieces
2) $2-$6 for a 4Mb Flash memory (if you can find them... they're starting
to get scarce)
3) EPROM programmer
4) soldering to the board
5) development of whatever you want to put on it
6) shipping
So, we're probably talking about $20 as an absolute minimum. From the way
I hear people talk about the system these days, it would have to be a
really good game to warrant these prices for anything more than about a
dozen people. And with the smallish group of collectors as the only
public, the price would have to be $30 or higher.
On the other hand, a CDROM is less of a restrictive medium, can easily be
developed for, and can easily be mass-produced at low prices - even with
high-quality artwork. A run of 500 pieces would probably be able to have a
retail price of $15 - but again, development of "CD worthy" material is not
so easy, and thus not instantaneous.

If you use the correct type of media and pregap parameters, there shouldn't
be any problem.
I use TDK media.
Many people use cheap media (which causes read errors, and may slowly
contribute to laser decay)... but the real problem is when people burn
coasters or fail to have an appropriate pregap between tracks - or try to
copy discs without precisely using the appropriate time signatures for all
the tracks. These issues cause a seek/read into an 'undefined' area,
causing multiple retries, and definitely causing some amount of damage to
the seek/focus assembly, at least over time.
Especially if the volume is not properly closed -- you can get the head
jammed beyond seek limit that way.
But if a 'professional' CDROM were to be produced, it would NOT be a CD-R
at all - it would be just like any other CD or CDROM game that you would
put into the Turbo.
And most of our HuC demos don't have any music track, and thus don't
require pregap knowledge or precise timing of tracks.
But if you choose to be cautious, use an emulator. They're safer.

Given a choice between the PCE-LT's screen and the Duo Monitor, the LT
wins hands down... Although smaller, the picture is a lot sharper. The
Duo LCD Monitor has a fuzzy, almost washed-out look to it.

I think there is a device that can load ROMS onto your PC-Engine/Turbo,
whatever. There was one on Yahoo Auctions over a year ago that sold
for about 12,000 yen or something. Can't remember the name of it. It also backed up the ROMS, obviously.

Paul, do you mean the Bee hucard copiers? I don't think they're used for PC
Engine hucards as someone tried one and it didn't fit into a PC Engine. Maybe
what you saw was something for some other console that used similar shaped
media like the old Sega machines.
