You know he's got a good point. Did they ever make a PC Engine with built
in ACD? I recently played Sapphire (FINALLY!!!) at Katsu Con in Baltimore
and now I'm kinda curious about my ACD options. Being an RPG freak, I was
never too interested in ACD, but I have a buddy wanting Strider .. so were
thinking of splitting the Kisado/ACD costs and sharing them. Are there any
options besides Kisado/ACD?
Thanks
Joe
P.S. I have the Pioneer LaserActive with Duo pack. Will that cause any
complications with Kisado/ACD?

Your best bet for an "all-in-one" is to get an American Duo and either
switch mod it or get a Kisado. You'll also need an Arcade Card Duo.

There is no "all-in-one" system out of the box.

The CDs are all-region, but the Hus are region coded (Japan/America).

Japan Duos will not play American games even with a Kisado (an additional
internal mod needs to be made).

One option some folks take is to get a Japan Duo + ACD to play all Japan Hus
and all CDs and then either get a US TG16 console (very cheap) or a US
Express for playing US Hus. This is the preferred route if you cannot find a
Kisado because the Arcade Cards can be picky with other adapters which are
not made to as high a tolerance.

Course if you have a Kisado then you can go wild and mix and match US
hardware with Japan software. A TG16 + CD + Kidaso + Arcade Card Pro will
run any Duo software you come up against.

Alas the LaserActive will not with with the Kisado IIRC because of the way
the card slot is shaped.

Unfortunately there isn't a system that will play every game, because
HuCards/TurboChips have transposed connectors that limit the systems they
can be played on. However, you can achieve it with add-ons. Your best best
is to get a SuperGrafx, RAU-30 + IFU-30 or SuperCD-ROM2, an Arcade Card, and
a reverse Kaseido adaptor. That way you can play HuCards (JPN), SGX HuCards
(JPN), CD-ROM2s (US & JPN), Super CD-ROM2s (US & JPN), ArcadeCD-ROM2s (JPN),
and TurboChips (US; with the reverse Kaseido adaptor).

Otherwise you could get a US DUO and a Kaseido Adaptor, and then later get
an Arcade Card, and that will let you play 98% of games, but not SGX games.

Actually I don't believe you can run US Hu-Cards on a PC-Engine / SGX
system. The US TG-16/Duo has a little hardware chip that (AFAIK) all of the
US cards check for before they will run. Since the PCE never had this
hardware, the US cards won't be able to find it.

However, you can run PCE Hu-Cards on a US system, because the PC-Engine
hu-cards don't check for that little piece of hardware.

So, you might need to add a US-tg16 to that last list. (though if you're
into the Duo for gaming, and not so much for collecting, I would personally
leave the Expensive Super Grafx out, and get yourself a PC-Engine Duo
instead:). None of the SGX games that I've seen have really taken my breath
away, and I certainly don't think they're

There is a modification on the turbo-list fileserver which details how to
modify a Japanese system to allow the usage of US games with a converter.

The USA games had a piece of code to detect the value of a hardware bit,
which had a reverse sense (high versus low) on the Japanese version from
the USA version. No Japanese code ever tried to detect this value. It is
not as complex as an extra chip. Just one tiny wire to be changed.

The USA system can run all Japanese HuCards with a converter, but since the
converters are so expensive these days, you'd be better to get a second system.

Both systems can run the overseas versions of CDROMs and Super CDROMs if
you have the correct hardware, except for about 5 exceptions:
Altered Beast CDROM requires a Japanese system 1.0 card to play effectively

A few other games require Japanese version of the Super System Card - going
from memory they are: (only about 4 of them)
Bonanza Brothers
Super System RPG sampler
A III Take the 'A' Train
Alshark

If you have a USA system with converter, either a Super System Card 3.0 or
and Arcade Card Pro will be effective.

There are many different configurations that could handle 'everything', but
I would suggest:
Japanese Duo, and Arcade Card Duo
USA TG-16
(which still won't play Altered Beast or SuperGrafx games)

If you insist on playing these, get the SuperGrafx, System Card 1.0, Arcade
Card Pro, CDROM system and RAU-30 (or Super CDROMROM2 instead of CDROM
system and RAU-30). Also, USA TG-16 for USA HuCards.

Well, it's like this:

Japan: PC Engine = US: TurboGrafx

And here's the kind of Software you'll find:

PC Engine (JPN) Hucards: Work only with PC-Engine and Supergrafx

Turbografx 16 (US) Hucards/turbochips: Work only with the Turbografx/duo

Supergrafx (JPN) Hucards: Work only with the Supergrafx system

CD's (JPN/US): Most work on PC Engine and Turbografx CD/duo systems

SCD's/Super CD's (JPN/US): Most work on both PC EngineDUO/TurboDUO or
PCEngineCD/Turbobgrafx CD with system upgrade card.

ACD's/Arcade CD's: Require the Arcade Card (there's one for the PCEncgine CD,
and for the PCengineDUO). JPN only.

As far as CD rom Games go, a TURBODuo will pretty much cover all of them,
except for the ACD's. As for the HUCARD's, unless you find a convertor
(which are tough to find these days), you're going to need to get the DUO
modded up so that it can play both JPN and US.

The Supergrafx was a system NEC put out to compete with the SuperFamicom/NES.
It played Supergrafx games, as well as PCENGINE games. The system proved to
be pointless, though, and there are only a handfull of (overpriced) games
available for it.

As for the ACD games, you're only missing out on some lackluster Fatal Fury
ports and a crappy version of Strider.

As far as PCengine games go, well, basicly, there's about 700+ available. As
for the Turbografx, I think it's under 100 (am I correct?).

I think that covers it. I haven't had my TURBODUO modded yet, but I used to
have a PCEngineDuo, and believe me, I'd take being able to play the PC-Engine
Hucards over the TG16 games I've got collecting dust over in the corner here
any day of the week. Man, for the most part, the western world totally got
scammed.....TV Sports HOCKEY? What the hell is with this game?

Um, I haven't slept in 40 hours, so, I guess everyone else can just fill in
the gaps...

They had Sapphire at Katsucon? Where? Was it in one of the gaming
rooms? Jeez! And I missed it!!! Guess I was too busy getting pics and
getting pics taken. Oh well.
