Lately I have been encountering problems with my 1541 disk drive. Basically,
I would try something like: LOAD"$",8 and get a FILE NOT FOUND with the
red LED blinking. AHA! I thought, the infamous alignment problem... So I
dug out one the notes I had saved on aligning the disk drive and got to
work. I unmounted the chasis from the plastic housing turned it on its side,
put in my 1541 TEST/DEMO disk and ran the alignment program. Well, wouldn't
you know it, it worked fine! Then I tried a "known good" disk (i.e. it had
worked before...) that had been giving me some problems earlier, and found
that the drive would hum but the disk wouldn't spin! This is true with
some other disks I also have (I suspect that if I sit the drive
horizontally instead of vertically even the disk that worked might fail).
Has anyone else encountered this problem? In particular, could there be
some type of drive belt that is slipping and needs to be replaced. If so
how do I get to it? Thanks in advance for any assist.
