I forgot to say that I get "error reading disk, 0" when I do cp 1: 2: to copy
the system disk. I first tried to copy it using diskutil, could this have
mangled the disk? Also, cat errno.h works on the original disk but
Z bombs to a standard bomb box. I am reluctant to try hello.c on the
distribution disk which I like to keep write-protected as much as possible...

Manx C is copy protected! The copies that you made will never work correctly.
I suggest that you use the original distribution disks for the compiler.
