Does anybody knows how to interface the Mac to Vax 11/780
(Unix 4.2BSD) without the use of a modem?
Can I just connect the RS-232C from the Vax 11/780 to
the Mac?

You can connect the RS-232 port directly to the serial port of the Mac.
Of course you'll need a special cable (as if there were such a thing as
a standard RS-232 cable). Use the pinouts found in macTEP, but swap
pins 2 & 3 on the DB-25 side. You might also have to connect pin 2 (+5v)
on the DB-9 to pin 6 (Data Set Ready) on the DB-25. As in all cases when
connecting two devices for the first time, be prepared to experiment.

I haven't found it necessary to alter the pin connections. The same cable
works fine. Maybe it is a question of selecting the right "Communication"
parameters out of the "Settings" menu in MacTerminal. Use "Other Computer"
rather than "Modem".
