Well this is a picaresque historical novel story and we are up
chapter 30. In this one a very significant historical character appears
and we are acquainted with the cabal attempting to reform the
Shogunate.

Some of the characters in this book are based on Tezuka's own ancestors.
You can see why Tezuka himself finished medical school. Black Jack is
another of Tezuka's book about a doctor/surgeon that revived his career in
1970s.

If you are into that era of Japan, I thought Sakamoto Ryoma was an
interesting historical character and he had a manga about him:

Does not seem to be scanalated but I went to your URL, Kenneth,
and it led me to a place <http://www.gao-subs.com/manga/> which
list the mange Hullo, Ryoma! but has no chapters.

I am quite familiar with Ryoma who was the moving force
that permitted two of the major domains to unite in the effort
to remove the Bakafu from power. He was murdered by political
opponents at a youthful age.
He had investigated the republican and democratic
forms of government and would have been unhappy with the
plutocracy instituted by the survivors of the revolution.

He is often portrayed sometimes quite briefly in
entertainments as the tragic hero though. There was a
goodly amount of time given to him in a TV show about
the Shinsengummi re-shown in the USA with subtitles that
ran for many weeks. As well he appears in manga about
that era.

Ryoma has been a popular character in the recent years. He had naturally
curly hair as some surviving photos would show, which is rare in Japan.

I just re-read Kiseiju/Parasyte (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parasyte),
which is about an alien invasion in a small town. These entities can take
over the head of a host and completely take over his/her identity and
control the rest of the body. Even more bizarrely, the new head is 100%
brain and also muscle and they can grow tentacles with sharp blades for
fighting.

I notice that blade-like tentacles show up quite often in manga and wonder
if Kiseiju contains one of the earliest example of such combat capability.

Anyway, the main character, a high school student, was almost taken over by
a parasyte but it failed and took over his right arm instead and they became
good friends.

This is by the same author that's doing Historie and although the artwork is
much cruder as it wrapped up twenty years ago, it's very entertaining
nonetheless.

Chapter 52 is now out and it is best Tezuka.
The doctor comes off as heroic in medical practice
and in battle. Though he does not want to be a military
surgeon.
