Tonight's the night! Yep, I am going to see it.

The new movie is scoring pretty highly at Rotten Tomatoes. That's
encouraging.

http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/star_trek_into_darkness/

I am not going to see the 3-D version. Three-D movies give me a
headache, not sure why.

Well, the good:

1) The cast is gorgeous and everybody acts their pants off!

2) It's action-packed and an emotional roller coaster ride!

The bad:

1) Nothing makes any dog-blamed sense! LOL!

As this is aimed at the same A.D.D. audience as the 2009 one,......you
didn't really expect a well writen storyline, did you ?
But lots of oooh-ahhh flashing lights special effects at 240
decibels,....the target audience, with the memory span of a goldfish, will
never know the difference.

I'll bet most think they are watching iron man, or any other similar dumbed
down, waste of two hours.

To be fair, many of the stories from the original series were pretty
idiotic.

Of course, their excuse is they had to rush out one episode a week...

Had to laugh at the massive 1/3 page ad today for the movie on Yahoo.

It's the same process which causes motion sickness. Basically it's because
your brain is telling you you're sitting still while you're eyes are
trying to tell you you're moving. I've only seen one 3D movie and it
didn't seem to affect me, but 3D graphic first / third-person computer
games (although not driving games for some peculiar reason) do make me
extremely sick and headachey after only playing for a few minutes. :-(

Judging by the speed they release them these days, probably next week ...
then again, judging by the accidental eary release of the current "Doctor
Who" season set, the "Into Darkness" DVD was probably released a month
ago. ;-)

It's well known that some video games can give you motion sickness.

But that's not the only problem with 3D movies. They can also cause
eyestrain, because Hollywood takes a lot of shortcuts with 3D and so the
3D effect looks artificial, with peculiar depth of field.

That was the case with "Avatar." While the scene was 3D, the characters
were not. Instead of having depth (you see around the person's face to
look at their ears further away), everybody looked like cardboard
cutouts placed in a scene. Kind of like those old Viewmasters.

The 2D movies that have been 3D-erised are even worse looking and exactly
like those bad old Viewmaster reels with cardboard cut-outs on gradually
blurrier background strips. Even though I'm a huge Star Wars fan, I
couldn't be bothered staying for the whole of the 3D-erised Episode I
movie and cancelling the rest of them is one of the few good decisions
Disney has made since buying the franchose from George Lucas. :-(

Most of the people on the planet do have the condition that they spend
money they don't have to - hence the "need" to constantly upgrade a
perfectly working computer, mobile phone, car, house, TV, etc. for the
"bigger", "better", "shinier" new model. :-\

In SOME cases this leads to the issue we have here in New Zealand where
the government is going to start paying for kids at "poor area schools" to
be given breakfast ... something the parents should be doing rather than
wasting money on irrelevant toys, smoking, drugs, and gambling.

Here, in NZ's bigger, western island, Australia, we've had the school
breakfast programs in widespread place for many years. Started as some
very caring teachers, then became State Government funded.

And not just "at "poor area schools""

The basic "breakfast in schools" has been going for a while in some
schools unofficially by parents, teachers, community groups, etc., but now
it's about to become an official Government programme, although some
school principals are declining the offer. (Judging by the complete
disaster the Government has made of the new teacher payroll system, an
Australian system, over the last eight months or more, I would decline it
too - some teachers haven't been paid at all by the system over those
months, so the schools have had to dig into their limited budgets while
the Government continues to insist the it would be more expensive and
dfficult to replace the system rather than let Novopay fix it.)

There was also a "trial" by Fonterra dairy company to put milk in a few
"poor schools", which is now also being rolled out to more schools.

BUT it's it's yet another burden on the tax system and doesn't address the
real issues - over-pricing by companies and shops, and some parents who
waste money on idiocies rather than food for their kids.

On the other end of the scale we have idiotic school principals who are
trying to force parents into buying their kids laptops / tablets to take
to school.

Not everyone wants to watch a movie filmed on a shoddy home video
camera inside of a dark theater.

Then Hollyweird shouldn't pay JJ Abrams to make his movies that way. ;-)

I can remember, 45-50'ish years ago, being Class Milk Monitor, about 5
mins before "little lunch" (mid-morning break) having to go out to the
kerb-side and get a create of (number of kids in the class)(about 40)
1/3rd pint milk bottles. If you were lucky, on a cold morning, the milk
bottles would still be warm!! Conversely, on a hot morning, the milk
might still be chilled!

Doesn't address the real problem where both parents are expected to have
full time, paying, jobs!! So they can waste money .......

Forget parents, our federal Government is going to finance a
laptop/tablet for each and every High School kid! So single Tax-payers,
like me, are paying for the kids computers!!

Oops!! Seems it was from Yr 9 not Yr 7!

Yep, I used to get milk at school when I was little and school lunches (I
started school in England), but I have no idea if my parents paid for that
as part of the school fees or by the Government.

That too, although they usually get some sort of Government assistance,
which is still wasted on unneccessary play things in SOME of the families.

School funding should come out of taxes.

In New Zealand the Government so underfunds schools that they have to ask
parents for "voluntary" school fees, as well as buying the stationery, and
now a laptop / tablet. Of course the New Zealand Government is so moronic
that they don't even properly fund the ambulance service - they have to
rely on donations and sending bills to people using them. X-(

I remember we had a Work Day to help raise funds for our secondary
school's computer room of Apple II computers - we did things like weeding
gardens, washing cars, etc. for local people and businesses.

Here in Australia, we have State schools and Independent/Religious
school systems. Seems to me that the State Government should pay,
totally, for the State System and then, if you (parent) want something
different, you (parent) should pay for it.

Some years ago, one of our State Premiers got into trouble because he
submitted the State budget to parliament and then withdrew it, went away
and cut some money from the State Schools budget and added it to the
Independent/Religious schools budget, then re-submitted the state budget.

Basically the same in New Zealand. There's also a few private schools
(non-religious, for kids with "rich" parents) and of course some
home-schooled kids.

Yep, but the morons in Govenment would rather spend taxpayer money on
their own pointless overseas trips, perks, and white elephant pet
projects. Meanwhile schools, hospitals, emergency services all go
underfunded and get funding cuts, and things like public transport,
electricity, etc. are sold off to greedy big business who instantly raise
the prices.

I have a vague recollection of the same thing happening here this year (or
at least stories of it being planned).

The higher up the management ladder people go, the more braincells they
lose and the less common sense they have. :-(
