According to Wednesday's Wall Street Journal, Atari is laying off
250 to 260 white-collar workers while adding 50 to 60 people to
its sales, marketing and engineering staff.
They also mentioned that sales have been slow for the 600XL since
they raised the price but that they need the increase to break
even. If they can't sustain sales at that price, they will consider
dropping it altogether. The 800XL has been selling well, even with
the price increase.
As a further cost cutting measure, they have announced the end of
the Atari Program Exchange (apx). This is a shame since the apx
has some good programs. There is no word on whether someone else
will pick up the programs.
