I think you would really like the Chameleon terminal emulator
from the Atari Program Exchange. It works with the 40 column
display but scrolls for 80 coulmns. It can emulate the vt52,adm3
and the glass TTY. It supports full cursor addresing and I have used
it on UN*X for using the vi editor and playing rogue.
