There's been a lot of licensed works based on Tezuka Osamu's characters in
the recent years but how many artists have revisited his/her own characters
from decades past?

As far as Tezuka is concerned, you must all know Pluto by Urazawa Naoki,
which is entirely based on an Astro Boy story. I have also seen new Black
Jack and some other stuff that were quite derivative and unoriginal.

Angel Heart/City Hunter

The author has completely changed the back stories of just about every
single character but in Angel Heart he really emphasizes on human interest
as opposed to City Hunter's incessant slapstick humor. Angel Heart has got
to have the best background in the manga today. Author may have developed
fascination with Chinese people and the main character from Angel Heart is a
Taiwanese girl and she brought a lot of supporting characters from her
homeland. The coffee shop from Cat's Eye also is the main hang out but
operated by someone else.

Bride of Demon: The Final Chapter/Bride of Demon

The premise is that Greek/Roman god Deimos fell in love with his own sister,
Venus, and Zeus punished them both. Deimos is turned into a hideous (not
really) demon and Venus I think is in hell. In the modern day, Deimos found
a girl that is the reincarnation(?) of Venus and wants to take her body so
Venus could live again. However, Deimos became fond of the girl and keeps
rescuing her from supernatural threats. Most of the time it's an anthology
with Deimos getting involved in other people's affairs and the girl may or
may not appear in an episode.

I actually remember reading this shojo horror manga waaay back in the 70s
and was surprised to see that they intend on finishing the plot. The artist
is doing her own stuff (Crystal Dragon) so TPB comes out at most once a
year. I read the first three collections but it does appear as they are
stalling. The subplot is that Venus is now jealous of the girl and she
shows up quite a bit. The original series began in 1975, lasting 17
volumnes, and the new series began in 2007 so the characters have been
around for almost forty years.

Anything else? I read somewhere that about 200 manga collections are
published each month so there's no way to keep track of everything. Even
Kinokuniya in San Francisco don't stock everything even after they devoted
one entire floor to manga. I am surprised at their Yaoi section and often
see middle-age women loitering in that area.

Go Nagai and Ken Ishikawa (Dynamic Pro) do/did this frequently in a
variety of ways. "Cutie Honey" and "Devilman" have been done and redone in
various media formats over the years. All of their super robots get mixed
up every now and then with revisits and remixes like "Mazinkaizer" and
"Mazinger Angels". Masami Yuuki's "Birdy the Mighty" is a full-on remake.
Yukito Kishiro went back to "Gunnm" (Battle Angel), threw out the original
ending, and has run with "Last Order" for almost twice as long as the
original.

Nagai is very famous for his self-parody. Who remembers how he managed to
incorporate Mazinger Z in Violence Jack?

The Cat's Eye coffee shop in the City Hunter series was operated by Miki
and Umibozu who are still running it in Angel Heart.

What changes were made to the background stories? I have not noticed
such chages between City Hunter and Angel Heart.

Pretty much everything about Ryo and City Hunter. In Angel Heart Kaori was
a nursing student and she and Ryo met years before she joined C.H. when her
brother was killed. Her brother was also a cop who started C.H. in order to
do things he wouldn't be allowed to do in his day job and how he was killed
has completely changed from City Hunter series. Ryo also appears to have
amnesia and picked that name from all the fake IDs that were in his
possession. (This is in contradiction as he remembers plenty of people from
his mercenary days, including members of Chinese mafia.)

Ryo also describe Kaori as "man-ish" in C.H. but in A.H. she's completely
maternal and nurturing.

In essence, Angel Heart and City Hunter have parallel universe thing going
on. They shared many characters but they are even drawn quite differently
because the artist matured during the ensuing years. Umi-Bozu is now a
black guy in A.H., BTW.

Angel Heart is currently in its 2nd series after the Comic Bunch was
cancelled and it moved to another magazine.

==========================

Yudetamago revived his Kinnikuman in the 90s with the story of the main
character's son in Kinnikuman Nisei but about a year ago he decided to go
back to the original series with stories that are taking palce in the 80s.
The collection volume number is continued from the original series.

This all happens when his son and other modern characters travelled back in
time and faced their predecessors in a massive tag-team tournament. Authors
(yes, two guys are sharing one pen name of "hard-boiled egg") came to the
conclusion that they have a lot more stories to tell from the original
series so off then went.

Thanks for the info.

I have only seen the anime (the only fansub series I have watched) and
not the manga so missed many of those details.

Recently CH was reprinted after the Weekly Bunch ceased publication and many
creators moved to another publisher. In Volume 1 there were a lot of
comments by the then-editor about how the title came about. For example,
Kaori was named after that editor's newborn daughter.

Also, they originally wanted to do a serious "sweeper" story but it wasn't
very popular so this editor suggested that the author make the stories more
filthy. This explains Ryo's only accepting assignments from female clients
and his giant boner.

Even Cat's Eye has a sequel these days:
