Many thanks to the 8 or so respondents to my joystick pinout query.
I have combined all responses into the list below
(fortunately, there were no conflicts!).
Seems safe to assume the following applies to any
machine using the 9-pin connector and on/off joysticks.
Did you know there were two ANALOG (trackball) inputs reserved?
You can use Color Computer sticks on a 5200!

Straight from the Atari Hardware Manual,
plus Vic-20 Owner's manual, page 149:

	1 2 3 4 5
	. . . . .	DB-9 connector

	  . . . .
	  6 7 8 9

1. (Joystick) Forward/Up Input
2. (Joystick) Back/Down Input
3. (Joystick) Left Input
4. (Joystick) Right Input
5. Y-Axis Pot/Paddle/Trackball Input
6. Trigger Input (Fire/Jump Button, Light Pen)
7. +5 volts (100 mA max)
8. Ground
9. X-Axis Pot/Paddle/Trackball Input
