Hello guys,

I know little about classic Macintoshes. I own a Power Macintosh 9600/300
with 128MB of RAM, which I'd like to upgrade.
I read it uses 168-pin DIMMs, are they the same as the ones used on PCs?
Can I buy any 168-pin DIMM RAM from ebay, or do I have to find some
specifically for this Mac?

I also have a Realtek 8169 PCI card laying around; does a driver for OS 8.6
exists? Where can I find it?

Thanks!

No, the NN00 power Mac series all used 5.5V 168-pin DIMMS. They're hard to find as they've been out of production for many years.

Data Memory System still has some in stock, but they're a specialty item < http://www.datamemorysystems.com/apple-powermac-pre-g3-memor y-upgrades/>

We Love Macs has some: <http://www.welovemacs.com/appo96me.html> $20 for a 128MB stick.

Not afaik. There's one for OS 9 here: < http://www.everymac.com/mac-answers/mac-os-9-classic-support -faq/gigabit-ethernet-for-macos-9-wireless-pc-cards-macos-9- compatible.html>

I am a 9600 owner as well. The first place I would look for parts is on
the LEM swap list right here on LEM.

When installing RAM pay attention to matching pairs. And be aware that your
slowest stick sets the speed of them all.

The detailed info including the RAM slot layout is easy to find.

No, as Bruce said you need +5v DIMMs.
From the Apple Memory Guide (circa 2000).

"Note: The Single In-Line Memory Modules
(SIMMs) used in previous Macintosh models
are NOT compatible with the Power
Macintosh 9600. This computer supports
+5V DIMMs only."

I don't have a direct link to the guide but it is on the Apple archive site and a Google search of the Apple Memory Guide will lead you there.

I have a 7300 and a 7600 with maxed-out 128 MB DIMMs, mostly in storage now.

That RAM seems to be getting harder the find although I just saw (last week?) a few DIMMs for sale on the LEM Swap list for a bargain. Don't  know if still available.  I can look up the seller if you like. Good luck --glen

That family of Macintoshes uses 168 pin 5V, FPM or EDO DIMMs. 168 pin
DIMMs for PCs are commonly SDRAM instead of FPM or EDO. See the
Wikipedia.org article about DIMMs. The notch should be offset
differently in the 5V FPM DIMMs than in the 3.3V SDRAM. However, if
you try really hard, you can force the wrong DIMM in their. I have a
ruined 9600 board in my closet into which someone forced an SDRAM
DIMM...

RealTek used to have drivers on their website going back to OS9. I
don't know if the 9 driver will work in 8.x and earlier. I don't know
why they pulled the older drivers. It's kind of inconvenient.

Thanks everybody for your answer. Sadly I live in Italy, where this kind of
RAM is way harder to find. I could buy some from the US, but I guess I'll
keep it this way. I just need it to scan with an old SCSI scanner.

I had already tried them, the extension loads but I can't find the card in
the TCP/IP panel. I could upgrade to OS 9, but OS 8 seems way more stable...

Hi,

I ordered a full set of 1GB of RAM for my PM9600 back in 2008 from OWC
(details below) they may still have some hiding in their warehouse if you
e-mail and ask.

The only Realtek match that I could find was for a different model of
ethernet pci card - but they have older drivers for 8.6:

In my experience 9.0 and 9.1 are more stable than 8.0.
I liked 8.5 a lot. ( and above takes more RAM but the features are worth it.

9.1 is my favorite in 7x00 and 9600s. But I always stuffed in as much RAM
as I could find. And VRAM as well .
