I'm posting this item for a co-worker -- any replies
should go to him at whuxj!abm, not to me.

Subject: ATARI 800 TRANSIENTS

I also have an Atari 800, and experience a different
transient problem. Occasionally the TV picture begins to
get fuzzy and break up, but I cure it quickly by changing
the TV channel off Channel 2, then back. This indicates
a problem with the TV, rather than with the Atari, yet it
never happens while I watch TV. I have never had the screen-wide
stripe of fuzz described by Mark Young.

However, I have had a much worse problem with my Atari, and
would like advice if anyone knows what's wrong. Occasionally
for no apparent reason--usually after I have been writing
a program for 4 hours!--the d**m machine suddenly refuses to
respond to the keyboard. The cursor sits there, refusing to
move or make a sound when you hit any key. Thus, I can't save
the program. I can't even list it to see what I've done! I suspect
the problem is related to typing too fast, or hitting a particular
combination of keys. Could it be a bug in the operating system?

This problem is VERY rare. Otherwise, I'm quite satisfied with
the Atari 800, especially its graphics, though I confess it's
not easy for an amateur like me to unravel all the mysteries
of color registers in various graphic modes. I especially like
having the ability to invoke up to four different voices at once.
Does anyone know how to get anything but square waves out of an
Atari? I'd like to use wave forms of my own design...
