G5 dual 2.5Mhz, June 2004, Radeon 9800 XT video. Model #A1047 EMC# 1969. M9457LL/A, liquid cooling.
Photo's
http://www.flickr.com/photos/glenstrek/sets/7215763262463008 1/
The case got bent, the hard drive and video card were dislarged on arrival. When received there was no anchor screw in the video card slot and no sled for the HD. The video card was reseated and appears OK, the hard drive is toast.
The G5 will boot from a retail OS 10.4 install DVD. It will also boot from a external FireWire 10.4.11 drive. All appears OK for the short time I had it running.
Conerns;
1. Damaged/Leaking LCS -- how to inspect it.
2. Hard drive cables and connectors -- no SATA drive at hand to test (one cable was found disconnected from the motherboard.
The seller has offered to:
1) send a new case
2) OR offer some $$ compensation
Questions:
1) Would anyone want to use this as production computer? All my production software is Mac PCI based.
2) How hard is it to take all guts out of this G5 and reassemble in a new case? Any propriety tools needed? And how to find "take a part" instructions? I'm up for a challenge --but is it worth it ???
3) Just live with the bend up case and get a few dollars off purchase price after all the Mac is 9 years old.
Somewhat disappointing to finally get G5 and receive it in a damaged condition. Sort'a like buying a classic Corvette and getting slammed by a distracted driver while stopped at a traffic light on its first drive. OTOH it is a challenge to restore what is left to restore.
All responses welcomed, thanks --glen

Curious who the Shipper was ... I had a similar G5 model (Quad Core) machine shipped to me by FedEx Ground, and even though the computer case showed no damage, the box and styrofoam formed around the machine was punched in on one end, and the G5 did not work as expected and claimed by the Seller. Other damage to the box included scrapes and dented corners.
All was sent back including the display that was in the ebay deal ... the display box had grappling hook holes in one side of the box and styrofoam, and scrapes and dented corners.
I decided I did not want to try and fix a liquid cooled system ... probably too expensive and beyond my level of expertise.
I'm now enjoying an air-cooled Mac Pro 2 x quad core 3.0 GHz under Snow Leopard ... running my Power PC apps under Rosetta.
Also decided not to buy / ship much else over the December / January holiday season ...

I bought one with a bent case several years ago, it looked just like yours
and it was far cheaper than a pristine one. My solution, which I highly
recommend, was to purchase a 27" monitor and hide the G5 behind it! Worked
great! But being the anal-retentive sort that I am I eventually got out a
bunch of large clamps and wrenches and went to work straightening the bent
aluminum. That worked pretty well cosmetically but since the rivets
were popped (like yours are) the case wasn't 100% stable; still I ran it
like that a few years. Finally I got a good used case at a great price and
transplanted all the "guts". What a PIA, unless you really like tinkering
with things it's very frustrating but not impossible. The only special
tool needed is a very long 2.5 mm torx driver, I found a 10" one at Ace
Hardware (Eklind 10" 2.5 mm torx #54925). Looking back at it I probably
should have stuck with my first solution.

Thanks for the replies, my response will follow but first the latest.
Monday: the damaged G5 ran for 3-4 hours with no apparent problems BUT when booting I would hear the fans start to rev up and a short pause rev down (< 1 sec) the a continued rev up and a successful boot.
Left it sit overnight without power and the side cover off, exposed side down on workbench with tissue paper under the LCS to check for leaks. No drips or wet areas on tissue paper the next morning. Rebooted and checked back in an hour or so to find a panic screen. Now it no longer boots. No start up chime, the fans start to rev and then rev down (< 1 sec) and stay down, blank screen.
Not good! power supply issue? Damaged CPU's? Any thoughts?
I'll try to summarize my reply's to posts I can remember, both on and off list.
First, I still can't remove the LCS cover as suggested. There was a plastic stud or rivet holding the cover in place. I shaved the top off with a knife but still I could not remove the cover.
As far the damage as a result of shipping I tend to agree it may not be the source. There is little damage to the shipping box. A slight crush on one corner and a small cut on one side that did not penetrate to the inside. OTOH, the G5 was not double boxed and some random pieces of styrofoam used to to keep the 44 lb contents in place were broken.
Regarding the idea of transporting the internals to another case, I agree that I will not trust the seller to ship the proper G5 case for this model in good condition. And as I suspected from two posters the process could be long and tedious. Perhaps a great retirement project but I still have at least a year to go and need the G5 now as I enter a greatly needed busy day job schedule.
Probably won't get much trouble shooting time until weekend --looks like junk, thanks everyone --glen

It sounds like you are drawing the same conclusion I am at this point. If
it worked that would be one thing, but it doesn't. You paid for a working
computer. Not another project, however fun. Send it back.

A word to the wise, ALWAYS get shipping insurance. USE THE USPS. Fed X (May they Rot in Hades) cheated me out of the PowerComputing Power Tower PRO that they must have dropped about four feet onto the concrete.
An eMail friend in Canada, sent me a spare case he had and I transferred the contents. RHB

Definitely good advice. In this situation UPS was the shipper and insures shipments for $100 if no additional insurance is requested. If a claim is filed they will inspect the shipping box and packing for damage. There is little damage to the box and packing so it is iffy they would honor this claim.
This was a bargain purchase, you take you chances and roll the dice. I have purchased Mac's from this seller in the past with good results. In general I have been very lucky with the used Mac market --but there is always a chance you will get burned. I do expect compensation from the seller. Thanks for your reply -- glen

It's significant that it ran OK until you opened it up, set it on its side,
etc. The panic might simply be that a RAM stick got dislodged; try pulling
and reseating all the pieces. But even if that gets it started it sounds
like you should still be seeking a refund.
