I've finally gotten around to reading the first two volumes and found
them very enjoyable. As Galen already mentioned, the story revolves
around a traveler nicknamed "Kuro" and her companion Sen. They're a
rather odd pair, because Kuro is a girl and Sen is a bat (although he
doesn't seem to have been born as one). He also turns out to be the
reason for their journey. The first two volumes gradually reveal some of
the events that led to their departure. A lot of the backstory still
remains in the dark, though.

The pace of the story is rather slow, and the general tone is indeed
melancholic. Still, many of the episodes in the first volume are rather
uplifting. With events from Kuro's past uncovered, the tone of the
second volume becomes somewhat darker, though.

Most of the panels are arranged as in 4-koma strips, although each
episode covers several pages. This uniform arrangement makes reading the
books a little wearisome at times.

Rating: 8/10
