Hi Guys

I've recently acquired a PowerBook 150 and I'm having some trouble with the
floppy drive - any floppy I try and initialize will (eventually) fail - I
took the chassis apart to inspect the state of the boards and they're in
pretty good repair although the cmos battery appears to have leaked
somewhat (I will get around to replacing this at some point) and when I
"opened the shell" I found a very small piece of *something* rattling
around inside the unit - I cannot identify this piece and I am unsure if it
is related to my floppy drive issue (I'm tempted to say it looks like a
floppy disk component but who can say). Does anyone know a source for
replacement floppy drives or even HDI-30 scsi > RJ45 (cat5) networking
options as I'm really keen to move data back and forward with this little
unit (I want to use it for writing).

I have taken some pictures of the mystery item that are available below:

Hi,

By the look of the pictures I would say that is one of the heads from the
floppy drive. I don't think repair would be easy as even if you did manage
to re-attach, you would have a problem trying to get the alignment perfect
so it could read/write. Not sure where you would get a replacement apart
from a donor machine.

Regards,
Sean.

Thanks for the reply Sean,

I thought the same I just didn't want to admit it to myself, I think all I
can do is look for a donor.

(Just for fun I went and quizzed an Apple Genius at my local Apple store
about this who looked at me like I'd just told him Microsoft were
developing the next MacOS :-) )

Many thanks!

And the new rulers of Apple Retail managed to run off most of us "oldtimers" from the Genius corps... I had a team with almost 100 yrs combined experience, all the way back to the ][.

Then, somehow, money became more important than service. I blame the influx of former Target managers.

You can probably salvage a replacement head or 1.44MB floppy mechanism from any mid '90s PowerBook. Bay drive modules might be a good option as donors.
