Hi!

I’ve got this Cube and some other Power Macs G4… and I’m really happy with
them. But I’d like to add Wireless LAN, especially to the Cube.

Actually, I already have the original Airport. But my wireless router is
configured to use WPA2 AES/PSK for security reasons. The original Airport
801.11b doesn’t support WPA2 and I’m not sure whether it supports AES.

I’ve found this:
http://lowendmac.com/macdan/md09/mac-wifi-pc-card.htm

The Belkin F5D7011 (801.11g) using the Broadcom chip looks like a suitable
candidate to me, but it is not clarified yet whether it will support WPA2.

Also, I’ve heard that Belkin (like any other manufactorer) might change which
chip is used in a model. If I buy an F5D7011 it is not certain that it acually
uses the Broadcom wireless chip.

Does anyone have an idea or a reliable source for PCMCIA Airport compatible
card for a Power Mac G4 (excluding the FW800) and Cube?

The questions are, in short:
1) PCMCIA (not USB!) and Airport compatible?
2) WPA2?
3) AES and PSK?
4) works on which versions of Mac OS 8/9/10?
(for the Cube, Mac OS 9 support would be great)

I’m aware this question might have been asked before, but I just couldn’t find
it answered in this very detail (WPA2/AES/PSK)…

Also, I found a lot of answers to use a USB adapter…
BUT for the Cube, I really need PCMCIA, not USB. On the other Power Macs,
where I can add a PCI USB 2.0 expansion card, I already found the perfect USB
WiFi adapter for Mac OS X: Edimax EW-7717Un (RT2870 chip). It supports Mac OS
X 10.3+, Windows 98+ and Linux, so I can really use it anywhere (except Mac OS
9 that is)!

Thanks in advance!

Only a few of the several versions of the F5D7011 actually uses the
Broadcom chip and is, thereby, supported by the Apple driver.

A much better alternative, for my money, are the various USB 2.0 cards.

The grand-daddy of them all is the ZyDas 1211b ...

http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=2007052315424638 1

... which has drivers available for G-series and I-series versions of OS
X. It has an internal antenna.

However, now I tend to use the Rosewill RNX-N150UBE, which also has OS X
drivers and, additionally, has an external antenna for better reception.

Of the two drivers ...

ftp://ftp.zyxeltech.de/ZyDAS/ZD1211_USB/Macintosh/

... the better of the two is the 4.5.7.0 version.

That’s what I feared. Too bad. If only they’d give the information which chip
is used before I buy it!

As I explained, that’s not what I want. I need the WiFi card for my Cube too,
and the Cube only has two USB1.1 ports. This is not a good way to expand the
Cube with WiFi.
The PCMCIA solution would be much more convenient.

Also: how about WPA2 and AES/PSK?

Anyway, thanks!

There are cheap PCI cards with Broadcom chipsets. For example, the
NetGear WN311B works by manually adding the PID & VID to the correct
Broadcom kext within the IO80211Family.kext>Plugins folder. (or run
"bcm43xx_enabler.sh" script from Terminal to add ALL known Broadcom
IDs). There are a whole mess of NetGear PCI card 802.11n devices that
meet your criteria for the Cube.

The Cube doesn’t have PCI slots. Just one AGP slot, which is occupied by the
graphics card.

USB1.1 doesn’t seem suitable, and I haven’t heard of a FW400 WiFi solution
yet.

Really, the PCMCIA slot seems to be the only way to add WiFi.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PC_Card

As I understand it, PCMCIA i.e. PC Card i.e. Cardbus is in a way like ISA and
(in its 32-Bit form) like PCI:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PC_Card#CardBus

Anyway, thanks. The PCI solution seems to be a good way to go for all the
other Power Macs.

The card with a stick-on label "VER.2000" is definitely OS X-compatible.

I believe there may be one other F5D7010 version which is OS X-compatible.

All the others are not.

Do you know if it supports WPA2 and AES/PSK?

Cheers,

My recollection is it was too early for the WPA2 specification.

I no longer use PCMCIA or Cardbus cards ... I prefer to use USB 2.0 or
Express/34 cards.

I'm confused, I thought the Cube came with an original Airport 802.11b
card slot which doesn't really work as a standard PCMCIA slot? If it
does work as a standard PCMCIA slot, you could consider adding a USB
2.0 PCMCIA and then a USB 2.0 WiFi adapter, which would kill two birds
with one stone, getting you both faster WiFi and faster USB.
------------------------------------
Here's the real easy way to find WiFi devices that work as Airport
with Macs. There are two chipsets that generally work as Apple
Airport, Broadcom & Atheros. Go to this page, and then select the
criteria you require in a drill-down to whatever is available. This is
one of the most useful databases on the web.

<http://www.wikidevi.com/wiki/Main_Page>

Here's an example using the "Browse data" link on the lefthand column
selecting Category "Wireless Adapter" in the upper right to drill-down
using your needed criteria of "Interface: PCMCIA" & "Chipset 1:
Broadcom" & "Supported 802dot11 protocols: bgn". I don't know if this
Airport Card PCMCIA slot is 16-bit or 32-bit, so you'll need to
determine this prior to searching out possible brands & models of
compatible cards available. There should be a lot, I'd bet at least 10
or 20 models at least that are both PCMCIA & an Airport compatible
chipset.

Here's results for 10 models using Broadcom, PCMCIA 32-bit, with
802.11n:
