Looking for OS 9 drivers for Digital Audio G4. Apparently HP no longer has them on their support site. This is not a 5100 Deskjet or 5100 Officejet just a "new" refurbished black & white 1200 dpi 5100 Laserjet printer. Don't know why HP uses "5100" for so many different printers.

I have searched Google and no joy. I can print from 10.4.11 on another networked G4 but need to print from legacy OS9 files on the DA that do not play well with OS 10.4.11 or Classic. Perhaps someone has the driver stashed away and could sent it --  or has a download link. Any suggestions? Thanks ---glen

Are you certain there were MacOS drivers? MacOS 9.2.2 was released in
2001, and this LaserJet 5100 was released in June 2002 when OS X
10.1.5 was the current release software for Macs.

The HP article titled "HP LaserJet 5100 Family Printers - Upgrading
the Firmware" says there is a MacOS firmware update tool that only
works in OS 9, which implies there were OS 9 drivers. You should check
the firmware version of your LaserJet because this could be the
problem why your printer isn't printing your files correctly in OS X
or Classic:

< http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.js p?lang=en&cc=us&objectID=bpl11999&jumpid=reg_R10 02_USEN
>

It says the current firmware for LJ5100 is version MB8.23 :

< http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDes cription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=18972&prod SeriesId=74341&prodNameId=74343&swEnvOID=54&swLa ng=8&mode=2&taskId=135&swItem=lj-5634-5
>

The drivers here might work after making sure the firmware is latest:

<ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/printers/software/ljlegacyen.hqx>

You should be able to view all these drivers in OS X by
Finder>Go>Connect to Server then add ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/.

Only info I found about this printer and "old" MacOS is here:

I have not checked the firmware but suspect since it was recent refurb it should be current. I will check however.

Your ftp link did not work. No problem however, read on.

Upon reading the manual the printer uses LaserWriter 8 for a driver in OS 8.6 and OS 9. The problem is the PPD which would have been supplied on the install CD is missing.

I did not get anything useful from Google searching "HP 5100 driver". Then I tried searching "HP Laserjet OS 9 PPD" and got a hit for a HP 5000, the predecessor to the 5100. The link led to helpdriver.com. Navigating thru printers>HP>Laserjet 5000, provided a free download which I believe is the same file provided by your ftp link (jlegacyen.hqx)

The installation installed many LaserJet PPD's including the LaserJet 5100. So I'm good.

On a side note I tried tried another PPD from a GCC XL/1200 1200 dpi printer. The HP 5100 replaced an aging GCC XL/1200 another monochrome printer. The GCC PDD  gave me the necessary features as well. I assume both PPD's were written in the same language. I think it is Adobe Postscript 4 (point something)

Interesting exercise with a good result. Of course I could have saved the legacy files as a PDF and print from another networked G4 with OS X -- na'h too much work. --glen

I think that that is a DesignJet large format printer not a LaserJet.  HP seems to have many 5100's.
Thanks for the reply --glen

Find an OS X system, go into System > Printers > PPDS and find the hp laserjet 5100series.gz. Cop it to your desktop, double click and you have the PPD file.

However it's a Postscript V 3 PPD., may not work.

From half-gone memories, I recall:
PPDs are not drivers. They are more like parameter files, informing the
Laserwriter driver and the application what the printer can do and what it
can't: resolution, colours, duplex, etc. As far as I know they have a fixed
syntax, but there are special versions that include extra parameters to
serve the possibilities of a particular program, e.g. PageMaker. Often
desktop publishing programs came with a collection of PPDs.

I think the main problems you can get when you use a different printer's
PPD are wrong colours or screens.
If you like, let me know to which extent this fits with your experience.

PPD's are 'Postscript Printer Description' files.

Postscript is the printer driver; the PPD tells the driver what the printer can do. The Desktop Printers introduced in LaserWriter 8 built printer drivers this way; this is also how OS X does it, which is why, sometiomes, you can extract PPD's out of OS X printer drivers and use them in LW8.
