I got a German-keyboarded 520c on eBay and it arrived safely today, with a battery that (naturally enough it seems) holds no charge and power supply that works fine. No other peripherals.

The reason I bought this was (OK, OK, in addition to playtime) to rescue data off of old pre-1440K floppies. I put one into the drive and voilà! it read the diskette perfectly. I have ordered an Apple AAUI-RJ45 Ethernet converter so eventually I can get the data off the hard disk.

The 520c is currently running OS 7.6 -- in German. I read German, but I don't prefer to compute in it, so I'd like to re-install the software. I have some questions to get me going.

1) Is 7.6 best or do I want 7.6.1?

2) The machine appears to have 36 MB of RAM (About this Mac says "Eingebauter Speicher 36.864 K" which is 'built-in memory' and it says "Gesamtspeicher 73,728 K" which is 'total memory'. In the Memory control panel it says there is no room for Virtual memory. I am not sure what to think about htis.

3) The hard disk seems to be 162 MB in size… at least, it has 152.7 used and 9.3 free. There's some 86 MB of Applications (including MS Office in German) and the System folder is 62 MB in size.

4) How do I re-install the system software? In the 90s I used to localize Mac software into Irish (System 6 and 7), so I have a whole lot of old localization CDs with various versions of OS 7 and 8 on them. How do I "burn" these to diskettes? It doesn't appear that there is enough space on the drive to put disk images. I seem to have a full set of 7.5.2 diskettes (11 or 12 of them, heaven knows if they are all still good).

5) Is it likely that I'll just have to trash most of the applications to re-install the OS?

Many thanks!

Hey, that's a nice machine! Unfortunately, mine is in the cupboard since so
long that I don't really remember many of the details. So take the
following with a grain of salt.

Software that doesn't need real (PC-like) installing can be copied to
another place, then copied back after wiping the boot volume. That works
for a lot of Mac software, but not all. Microsoft is one of the exceptions.
Plus, even if you have the install disks for it, you may get a message
saying that "this software cannot be installed on this System" because it
doesn't want to install a German program on an English System.

If you have 7.6 in English, or 7.6.1, I would probably wipe and install,
but if you have only 7.5.2, I would leave the System as is -- unless the
German is bugging you too much, of course. Although, it's true, 62MB is
huge for a System folder. Check the Microsoft folders in there, like the
Word/Office Preferences: they may contain tons of stuff.
In general, this 520c looks like it has seen much use and little
maintenance, and you may want to give yourself more air by starting afresh.
As said above, most of the applications can be copied to a backup disk,
from which you can take them back later as needed.

I think 7.5.2 can easily be downloaded, but not 7.6.
I may have it on some ZIP disk.
Which brings up the other point: the nicest way to install is from a
connected SCSI drive. That can be a CD reader, a hard disk, or a ZIP drive.
Or another Mac started up in SCSI mode!
Also in that cupboard, I have an Orbit drive (with removable disks of 1GB,
I think) that can be switched between SCSI and USB. You may want to get one
of the above on ebay, but make sure they come with the right 30-pin square
plug to fit your blackbird.

Ah yes, the RAM. It looks like it has RAM Doubler installed. That's very
good--but RAM Doubler can't be copied over and back after installing a new
system, you'd really need its installer.
"No room for virtual memory" is an irrelevant message: RAM Doubler
activates a kind of virtual memory itself and can't run with the Mac's own
virtual memory activated.

I don't know the difference between 7.6 and 7.6.1, but I seem to remember
that either is more easy to get on a network (Ethernet) than 7.5.2--maybe
you need 7.5.3 in fact. There were some issues with different AppleTalk
versions, and file sharing with other Macs sometimes worked one-sided only,
sometimes not at all.

Good luck and have fun!
