I have to say that while I had dabbled with
anime rentals from local stores it was not
until I watched Spirited Away in a Theater
that I became a fan. That was a free ticket.

A few months back I evem bought a copy of
Spirited Away. Still enchanting visit to
the Japanese spirit world.

Of course that led to manga and the story
from there is all spiraling up or down,
into extreme fanhood.

I recal when Spirited Away first came out it was only shown in 50 cinemas
in the UK even though it had won the Oscar for best animated film, yet even
a mediocre Hollywood film would usually be shown in at least 500 cinemas.

The trouble is the UK cinema chains are all owned by Hollywood studios and
they are loathe to show anything not made in Hollywood. Even British films
struggle to get a screening unless they were Hollywood financed, so
Japanese films stand no chance at all. It's very sad. One of the few anime
films I recall seeing in the cinema here was Metropolis, which had a
special screening at the National Film Theatre. Experiencing anime on a big
screen really makes such a difference, especially something as spectacular
as Metropolis, with its dazzlingly beautiful Art Deco cityscapes. It's
probably sacrelige to say so, but it knocked Miyazaki's films off the top
spot for me.
