2021 has begun and so has the 2021 Winter anime season. I checked out the previews for many new series and I was getting pretty despondent about the chance of finding anything interesting.
Well – I just watched “Vlad Love” and my mind has changed about this season altogether. Mamoru Oshii is back and I’m loving every minute off it!!!!
On a dark and ominous evening a vampire girl sneaks into Japan and the security forces are on full alert, but they don’t find her. A few days later the vampire girl is found, but by a high school girl who is obsessed with donating blood. Is this a match made in Vampire Heaven? Well, maybe not, but this horror comedy is real blessing for those of us fans who remember Mamoru Oshii’s wonderful scripts and direction from anime in the 1980s.
Unless you hate Mamoru Oshii’s style you really need to check this out. It’s a breath of fresh 1980s air that is sorely needed in the world of 21st Century anime. My initial rating is A.
