All,

I have a G4 with an Apple USB keyboard, M2452.

What other keyboard would work with this Mac®?

Although it is a pretty keyboard (Bondi Blue) the keys have horrible action.

I have cleaned it twice per the instructions I found on line and
lubricated it with the Teflon® spray both times. It is slightly better
but not nearly as good as the old "Nimitz" keyboards on my 7100 and 9600.

What should I be looking for? Is there a way to use a "Nimitz" keyboard
with the G4?

Thanks for the help and suggestions.

Neal

Any usb keyboard should work, although PC keyboards have the command and option key mapping swapped, there are utilities to fix this, like DoubleCommand: <http://doublecommand.sourceforge.net/>

You may be able to swap those keys in the Keyboard control panel, but I'm pretty sure that only happened in Snow Leopard, so it doesn't apply to your G4.

As Bruce said, any usb keyboard should work. Any keys above the
standard may or may not work. I am using a dell keyboard with my G5
that I also used with my G4s. Decent action and it also has volume
up, down and mute buttons that work with my Macs. But the keys that
help with browsing (forward, back, home, reload) don't work with
TenFourFox or Safari 4.1.3

So pick one for the action you like. I recommend getting one with a
built in usb hub, they are incredibly handy.

In 10.4 you can remap the modifier keys with the keyboard Control
Panel, don't know about earlier. But to be honest, after about a week
the muscle memory gets used to the different key locations and it is
not an issue after that.

USB Overdrive might work for that.

I've been using the Apple USB Keyboard (A1048) for a long time and I got tired of it. I wanted a good mechanical keyboard so I bought a 'Nimitz' keyboard and a second hand ADB - USB adapter, that was cheaper than buying a new USB mechanical keyboard.
Still waiting for them to arrive but I think I will not regret.

Thanks for that valuable information, Bruce. I
bought a keyboard for my Mac that was made by
Kensington. It was inexpensive and the action
felt great, but the Command, Option and Control
did not function like a Mac keyboard. I plan to
give this software a try.

Here is a link to the Kensington: http://www.jr.com/kensington/pe/KEG_64370/
The only downside for this model is the lack of
any places to connect USB devices to the keyboard.

Will an add-on USB Keyboard function the same at startup?

Some may not if I am not mistaken. Could also depend on how it is
connected ... on-board USB vrs a USB PCI card.

Some things to think about.

With the caveat that you need to use the 'wrong' key to produce the control- part of the command a PC keyboard will work. The newer flat Apple keyboards require a driver on older Macs (any Mac prior to their introduction) so you do need to keep the original USB keyboard around for this instances (I just plugged my old keyboard into the new keyboard when I needed to do that on my old iMac.)

Built-in USB versus PCI card doesn't matter save in OS 9, I believe.

Been using a M0115 Apple Extended Keyboard with a Griffin iMate
adapter for the past year or so. Works fine on my G4 DA. Only issue
I have, is when I power up, the DVD-RW drive opens its drawer.
Otherwise, no problems.

None of the key re-mapping would work at startup. But all the necessary keys for start up control should be available.

I don't know about it working at start up with a PCI-USB card but I would use it with the built in USB anyway, no point plugging the keyboard / mouse into a USB 2 port.

I'm using a Microsoft Digital Media Pro keyboard on my G5, and I've been
using it for a long time on my G4 DA (OSX 10.4), with great satisfaction.
The keys action is good enough (far from the old ADB Apple Extended
keyboards - those were good! - but better than many), nice looking, and the
additional keys are very useful.

Of course, for using the additional keys (some are even programmable) you
have to install the Microsoft driver, that's available for OSX but not OS9.
In OS9 the keyboard works fine, but the additional keys don't work (of
course).

I agree that Micro$oft is not the nicest company in the world ;-) but their
hardware is usually well made.
You can look around for a Microsoft or Logitech keyboard that has OSX
drivers available; Logitech products are usually excellent quality (best
mice I ever used).

> Will an add-on USB Keyboard function the same at startup?

My MS keyboard works fine on startup, when pressing "special" keys like
Command+Option+P+R (reset Pram) or Command+S (Single-User mode).
