There are some oldschool "nerd" groups that are still active, like comics
and other 8- and 16-bit computer groups. It's nothing like the old days,
but if I am looking for answers for the TOUGHEST questions, there's no
place like Usenet. :)

Anonymity is an important thing , and used to be very common before
corporate overlords like Google and Facebook forced you to give up
yours....anonymity protects people from virtuous do-gooder pricks too.

Two of us have now suggested you set up a new GMail mail account to
access Usenet, and if you object to Google Groups, through one of the
free news servers, all of which can take false email names.

This is an Apple II Usenet group., so if you use a IIgs, or use a IIgs
emulator capable of going online with the Marinetti TCP/IP stack, you
can always use SNAP, my Usenet client for the IIgs to access this forum.
It happliy allows you to use any name you like to post messages:

https://speccie.uk/software/snap/

The problem with the Facebook Apple groups, is that it is almost
impossible to see the nuggets of information that interest me, amongst
the mass of messages about gaming. Here it is far more direct, and you
can get to the point more quickly.

It alsio means you can steer clear of Facebook, as many people just do
mnot like the constant barrage of advertising, and friend suggestions...

I also follow comp.os.cpm. There's still a few out there.

Facebook is 1/4" short of worthless as a technical forum. Add in their role
in destruction of our political environment and I feel like taking a shower
every time I access it.

comp.sys.ti and comp.sys.mac.vintage still see some traffic, though not as
much as we have here. There are even some relatively new groups that pull
in moderate traffic levels, like comp.sys.raspberry-pi.

This is the issue I have... you have to read through everything to find anything, as opposed to a threaded message forum like Usenet where you can just skim the titles.

I find it a little odd that some equivalent to https://www.lemon64.com/forum/ hasn't become The Place To Be for Apple II users. (I imagine a few have been tried over the years, but apparently nothing stuck.) https://www.reddit.com/r/apple2/ has about 3K members and might be a viable alternative.

I've been reading this group for 30+ years, starting back when it was still comp.sys.apple and we had to redirect the occasional Mac user. I'm a little surprised Usenet is still a thing, but it seems to have tremendous inertia.

The .binaries newsgroups will probably keep Usenet alive forever. As of
Jan 2020 62+ TB/day of traffic and growing.

Discussion newsgroups will probably die off when we all do. The Google
Groups interface at one time was pretty good, but now is very poor IMHO
(I prefer a client anyway; using Thunderbird, very happy with it). If
that (GG) is how the next generation gets to Usenet, they'll just move
on. Reddit is the closest substitute to Usenet, IMHO. However it is
centralized.

w.r.t. the OT. My ISP has spam filtering setup for Usenet. I didn't
see any of the aforementioned spam that created this long
misunderstood-fueled thread. I had to take a look at Eternal September.

The content quality here is unparalleled. Usenet forever.

P.S. For my first 1-2 years of Usenet I used UUCP. I'd like to see if
I could get that working again, for the lulz.

Despite its name, AtariAge has some forum space for non-Atari
contemporaries. It seems most of the TI-99/4(A) crowd has migrated there
from comp.sys.ti and the Yahoo-hosted group/mailing list. There's also an
Apple II presence there, though at a lower level of activity than the TI
crowd.

I'm a moderator there. We have lots of non-Atari forums including an Apple II forum.

I used to be a regular as well. I probably need to sync up again, it's
been a while. There are/were a number of retro boards I used to visit,
but the only constant has been Usenet. One client, all the news, all in
one place. Or was...
