I just got to watch “Tenki no Ko”, aka, “Weathering With You”, Makoto Shinkai’s follow-up movie to “Your Name”. This is a gorgeously animated romantic fantasy about a runaway teen in Tokyo who meets a girl who can literally bring sunshine to a rainy day. The Tokyo region is enduring a summer without sunshine so the two teens set up a small business to bring a bit of sun to local events. But there is a cost involved in trying to change the weather.
The animation in the film is the real hero. The scenes of Tokyo are incredibly realistic and beautiful. The sound track paints additional aural pictures to go with the visuals. The plot is straightforward and consistent. The characters are endearing and act appropriately for their ages. All-in-all, this is a wonderfully engaging film. I recommend it highly and my rating is a solid A.
