Peeve: many news reports that this is the first time a human
has exceeded the speed of sound without a plane or spacecraft.
Am I the only one left who remembers the first supersonic
ground vehicle?

Those were just George Lucas' fantasy in the Indiana Jones IV movie. ;-)
(Yes, I do know they were real.)

OK, next I'm thinking of asking if I'm the only one who uses Google :)
Google "first supersonic car" and you will get various references.
The following is from one item, from BBC News, which is certainly
a trustworthy source:

<quote>
The British team that claimed the land speed record in 1997, taking
a car through the sound barrier for the first time,
is planning to go even faster.

RAF pilot Andy Green made history in 1997 when he drove the
Thrust SSC jet-powered vehicle at 763mph (1,228km/h).

Now he intends to get behind the wheel of a car that is
capable of reaching 1,000mph (1,610km/h). ...

I think he mispelt googol, which is very large number - the digit 1
followed by 100 zeroes:
10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,0 00,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,0 00,000,000,000

And he was an Austrian.

I loved all the people cheering about an American breaking the record.

Tells you America is all hat and no cattle these days.

Just as well this was cross posted, as the first time I read it, I
couldn't recall the term "googolplex" which is an even larger number,
i.e. "The worlds second largest number with a name. The number One
followed by a googol of zeros." (from google)

I'm still working on "pi" to the last decimal place.
