I'm kinda curious.

I've occasionally run into stuff that doesn't work on a Laser 128, and I'm
kinda wondering if it might be possible to modify the Apple //e or //c
firmware to work on a Laser 128 and improve its compatibility.

(I know that some 48K stuff works better when you load an Apple ][ or ][+
firmware onto the LC and run it from there.)

The first stage is to transcribe the monitor for the Apple //e (Enhanced).
which is in the //e Technical Reference. I currently have C100-C271
transcribed. I'm kinda worried about giving myself another RSI in the
process. :/

I don’t know what you mean by improving it. Personally I like the Laser ROM better than the Apple ROM.

It’s faster. It has a way better monitor listing. I ported the Monitor lister over to work on a IIe. I use it instead of the built-in Apple one.

I have all the firmware hex dumps from a Laser 128EX. I have heard of some upgrading their Laser 128 ROM to the latest ROM version that normally goes into a Laser 128EX and have it working.

ICBM about the regular Laser 128 ROM though, as I haven’t seen its ROM listing yet, but I am sure the 128EX’s ROM has been vastly improved.

A few of the less common entry points don't work, breaking stuff. There's
actually been a couple games - I can't remember which, it's been 25 years
since I last touched a Laser 128 - that only worked if you ran them from
the original version of INTBASIC, precisely because it loaded the Apple
][+ monitor ROM into RAM and used that in place of the ROM.

Actually, my favorite ROM is EDM, which forgoes the built-in diagnostics
for an improved monitor.
