Oh-oh, I've never opened up my SmartMouse, but if both the SmartMouse
and the SmartTrack use a specialized chip (as does the 1351), that
chip would be impossible to find.

That is, if the chip is the cause of the problem,

EDIT: As I was writing my response and trying to determine answers to
anything.... here is a drop in replacement for the MOS5717 IC (
https://www.pyrofersprojects.com/blog/product/mos5717-replac ement-for-1351-mouse/
)
As I read, the 5717 was the key chip so if you need a replacement for the
5717.... that would be it.

If the Smartmouse (and presumingly also the SmartTrack) used the 5717 (MOS
or CSG badge.... doesn't matter) which some sources indicated, then the
drop in replacement from the link above maybe what you need if it is that
IC.
The Smartmouse (and I think also SmartTrack) has additional stuff for RTC
(real time clock) which is NOT a function of the 5717, IIRC.

The trick they used to have 3 buttons in the mouse may also be what CMD
used in the 3-button game pad in the conversion otherwise, I would not see
how you would get 3 buttons on the mouse to work in Joystick mode when the
mouse directions are consuming the joystick port lines for Up, Down, Left,
and Right. It is interesting how they would achieve the number of buttons
as they did but I think the CMD Smartmouse and SmartTrack had more going on
inside their than the 5717 IC which as I wrote this response has found to
be the DS1202 RTC chip. There is probably a drop in replacement such as the
DS1302 which Maxim makes but one with electronics engineering skills may
have to verify or engineer a little piece of board to plug in if there is
just some kind of "packaging" difference in the IC from what is now made
and what was made in the 1990s.

These are something to look into but in no way or form am claiming this a
solution to Bruce Thomas's situation.

THanks Rick and Robert.

Yes, both the SmartMouse and SmartTrack use the CSG5717.

One of my SmartMouse units (I believe this one was made by Maurice after he
got the CMD equipment) has the 5717 in a socket. The other two units are
soldered to the boards.

For timing they all have a DALLAS DS1202 and this would keep time with
power from a 3V watch battery that is soldered to the board.

Seems Pyrofer doesn't have a contact us link on his site. :(

He's usually in the #c64friends IRC channel on freenode.net.

If that falls through consider getting a Micromys V5 interface which
supports 1351/Amiga/ST/Falcon and probably others, nice if you own
several computers which allows you to use a more modern mouse.
I know the Amiga mouse is different but I made an adapter using a
PIC16F628 so I can use a MS optical mouse which is USB but has PS/2
fallback mode when using the USB-PS/2 adapter. Not sure the Micromys
supports optical mice but that should be easy to find out.
