“Gleipnir” is based upon a dark and rather edgy sci-fi manga series about a teen who has developed unknown transformation powers and his attempts to find out what has happened to him and why. He runs into a girl who is also trying to get information on people who transform and he soon finds out that he is not the only one who is transforming into strange and monstrous forms.

The first episode of the anime is subtly different from the early chapters of the manga and to a good extent those changes remove much of the edginess of the manga and make the anime seem much more ordinary. It’s as if the anime creators want to change the MC’s character to be wimpy instead of being psychotic. It’s an unfortunate decision because the edginess is what made the manga reasonably compelling.

The manga does have its weak points and as it has progressed it has become murkier and unnecessarily more complicated. I was hoping that the anime would provide a clearer interpretation of the manga, but I feel that the anime will create new faults of its own even before it gets to the messy parts in the manga. So I’m not going to bother to continue with the anime and I’ll give it a C. (So it’s yet another “C” show for Spring 2020.)
