Does anyone know who these people are who are posting these weird foreign language posts or what we can do about it? Is there a way to report them? They seem to be multiplying.

For awhile there I was reporting them as spam and google was removing them. My computer crashed a while back and my cel phone doesn’t give me that option.

If you can, just report it as spam.

They are just spam, and as Usenet is an open messaging system, and our
Apple II groups are not moderated, there is nothing that anyone can do
about it.

This means there is nobody that you can report it to, though if you are
accessing Usenet through a closed system such as Google, they might be
able to filter them out.

Most of us wil access Usenet through other news servers, so we just have
to put up with them. Usually they go away after a few weeks, as has been
the case in the past.

If you are not accessing these groups through Google, your news server
client may have a filtering system that you could use to strip them out.
Otherwise just ignore them...

Cheers - Ewen

Keep moving. Nothing to see here.

I am not generally on google groups (I generally use a real news server) and
therefore assume that is precisely why I see no weird posts in a "foreign"
language... by this I assume you mean a character set that is not in plain
7-bit ascii... that can't happen as far as I know. It's at your end.

Although I did wonder what kind of alien had invaded your computer, and
indeed perhaps you, until I saw other posts that are seeing the same
apparition apparently...

Posts of the nature you described do not appear on usenet, at least not on
https://www.aioe.org/ and that is for sure.

Keep moving. Nothing to see here.

No need. I see no weird "foreign" posts at https://www.aioe.org/

By "foreign" I assume he means a character set that is not in plain 7-bit
ascii.... It's at his end.

I think this is entirely google's fault. My understanding is that if nobody
replies to google spam like this it can be removed.

I could be wrong. That occasionally happens... but usually it is someone
else who is wrong.

I was able to report it as abuse. The posts usually disappeared a few days after I report them.

What is even weirder is if you go back to the groups.google.com home page, the foreign posts show up as one of your groups, but gives an access denied when you try to delete that group.

@Bill and Ewen - the foreign text actually looks more like spanish and is almost readable. It mostly looks like political jibber jabber.

an update.
I decided to translate one of the messages. Wasn't what I expected. It was actually porn talk. I am surprised google wasn't even able to filter that out. But within 5 minutes after reporting it as abuse, I don't know if it was Firefox or Google, but the link was closed up and you had to click on view to see it.

Within about a week it should be removed from the group.

Close. It's Italian.

Hi Rob,

Another weird post...

So it was not the Chinese strain of Spam... it was the Spanish strain of
Spam. LOL :) Donald will be disappointed...

> It was actually porn talk.

The Spanish are spending a lot more time indoors these days... we all are.
I was surprised and pleased how quickly Scott Moe acted. We are still
getting up to speed next door to you but Nova Scotia has us all beat for a
peed-off premier.

> I am surprised google wasn't even able to filter that out.

I am not surprised about anything google does or in this case doesn't. They
are so pervasive and innovative on one hand, but sometimes the technical
details are not what I would have done. Like gmail not allowing zip
attachments...

Lately my Firefox seems to be getting uppity too... it must be catering to
the noobs.

Good Job Rob! Keep on googlin' (CCR)

Bill

Hi uso,

Well if it was porn then it is still understandable because the Italians
like the Spanish are spending a lot of time inside lately.

Everything is in Italian, about a lawyer, use Google Translate. Just do like Rob does (and I do) and report it s abuse,

I just did (my phone didn't give me that option).

I assume this is just a spam bot, but it does seem weird that it decided to post porn and lawyer spam messages in Italian in a US-centric Apple II group. Strange times indeed...

Wouldn't be the first time. Every couple years of so it happens and hits
at least one of the groups I frequent.

That’s the question, though. To what end? There is absolutely nothing to gain from this other than to overload the internet with meaningless junk.

Maybe that’s the point. This kind of stuff is not coming from the Italians as news, but from the Russians or North Koreans trying to bog down our internet.

Exactly.

It’s easier to spam blocks of newsgroups than to select specific groups
manually.

Spam happens. ;-(
