From her wikipedia page:
After graduation in 1979, Rometty went to work for General Motors
Institute[23] in Flint,[9] where she was responsible for application
and systems development.[7] In 1981 she joined IBM as a systems
analyst[2] and systems engineer in Detroit.[23][9] Initially working
with clients in the insurance industry,[10] she spent her first ten
years at IBM in technical positions.[2] The New York Times writes that
she "quickly moved up to a series of management jobs,"
10 years technical. Sounds like she might have written some stuff, but
she wanted back into management.
