“Jibaku Shounen Hanako-kun” is an adaptation of a shounen fantasy/comedy that has some fairly dark elements. The story is based upon the Japanese urban legends of seven spirits that haunt various high schools. One of the common spirits is a girl spirit called Hanako-san who haunts a girl’s washroom stall in schools.
In this variation, Hanako is a boy who haunts a girl’s washroom stall. Nene Yashiro, a first year high school student, searches out the mysterious haunted stall in order to get a wish granted. She is shocked when she finds out that the Hanako in her school is a boy instead of a girl. Despite this Yashiro goes along with the change and asks to have the boy who she likes fall in love with her. Hanako-kun is reluctant and initially tries to use non-supernatural methods to help Yashiro, but after those fail Yashiro takes a magical scale to try to get her wish granted, but instead she becomes cursed.
The first episode was essentially a series of non-stop gags which were done fairly well. But there were also hints indicating how the story will become much darker as it goes on. I’ve only skimmed the manga but I was struck how it feels very similar to “Yumekui Merry” in tone.. In any event, I enjoyed the first episode enough that I’ll stick with it for a while to see where it goes. My initial rating is B.
