“Id:Invaded” is a new original sci-fi/mystery anime about a police force that is using a new and secret technology to track and capture thoughts from killers and then use those thoughts to go into the Id of the killer to find clues and eventually capture the killer. The first two episodes were broadcast back-to-back, which was good because it was a two-part story and the viewer really needed the second episode to start to figure out this world and to get some clues about the characters.

A fast dive into a very trippy set of changing visuals leads to a character appearing. He calls himself the Great Detective Sakaido, but he doesn’t know more about himself except that he is supposed to solve some crime. The world where Sakaido appears is all fragmented as is Sakaido’s body. Sakaido proceeds to put himself back together and explore nearby where he finds the stabbed corpse of a girl. Sakaido recognizes the girl.

At the same time a team of investigators is monitoring the world where Sakaido is exploring while recording clues and visual evidence. A field team goes out to find the real world equivalent of where Sakaido is located because they expect to find a serial killer there. They do find the killer, but things do not go as planned and the overall situation becomes much more complicated.

The first two episodes were imaginative and intriguing. The character animation is a bit off-putting and the dialog is a bit stilted but the story moved along at a good pace and the mystery was reasonably well done. The initial case was solved and provided the set-up for the overall mysteries of the series. I enjoyed what I saw and I’ll stick around for more. My initial rating is B.
