I recently picked up a Commodore SX-64 and am completely in love with it.
The unit is in amazing condition and the previous owned cared for it with
lots of TLC.
I do have one issue that I am hoping other may have run into. When I turn the
unit on, it emits a high pitched whine. My nearly 50 year old ears can barely
register the whine, but it drives my kids crazy.
I am wondering if anyone has experienced this before. Could it be a bad
ground?

You would need to first isolate from where inside the unit the squealing comes
from. CRT televisions over time, sometimes have that problem.
It would be worth having the unit checked out by a TV repair shop that still
does repairs on CRT's; at the very least being able to rule it out.
