Hi All,

I'd like to find an early set of the Apple-branded paddles. I know the square version is earlier than the rectangular atari looking one. There seems to be two variations on the wheel itself with the earliest case. One a bit flat, with a metal top, and the other with a second layer which pops up and a smaller metal piece in the top. Anyone know which is earlier? Guessing it's the flat cap version, since the 'stacked' knob looks similar to the knob used on the rectangular paddles.

While on the subject, I know the Apple II shipped with paddles. Did
the II+ ever ship with paddles? If no, did the bundling end during the
II's lifetime, or with the II+'s introduction?

My Apple II+ (bought in 1980) came with paddles.

Mine (early 1981) did not. I don't know if that was standard or a choice. We bought a joystick at some point but I don't remember if that was with the computer or after. (One of those armor-plated TG joysticks...)

Somewhere around the 81 mark, they had to meet some kind of RFI criteria and the paddles created more of it. Presumably acting like an antenna, so they left them out.

As did mine, bought in December, 1980.

I have 2 pairs of these old paddles sitting in an office file drawer. One pair came with my earliest Apple II Plus computer (1978) and the other pair came from a used computer surplus store (early 1980s).

Probably the same need to meet FCC Class B certification that caused
Tandy to discontinue the Model I around the same time.

The only ones I saw were... mostly rectangular, but they tapered somewhat towards the handle end...
