“Kabukichou Sherlock” is a very loose adaptation of Sherlock Holmes into contemporary Japan with the Holmes cast of characters portrayed as “wacky” denizens of the seedier side of Tokyo. This is an ensemble show with a deliberate comic approach that is mixed in with some graphic gore.

In the first episode Dr. Watson is a fish-out-of-water who is wandering the red light district in some misbegotten search for a bar where detectives hang out. When Watson arrives he witnesses a competition wherein the detectives race out in order to try to find Jack the Ripper and win a big reward. Watson follows Holmes onto the chase and finds out that Holmes likes to announce his deductions on a Rakugo stage.

I’m not a big fan of ensemble comic/action anime shows like this. This one will probably be fine but it did nothing to intrigue me or interest me in the characters. There are plenty of other cinematic interpretations of Sherlock Holmes that I like better. So I’m not continuing with this any my final rating is C.
