Leon,
I might suggest a couple of things.
First, sometimes the rollers lose their 'softness', and their traction
along with that. I seem to recall a roller renewal chemical advertised
once upon a time, but can't come up with that now. If they are still
available for purchase, I might suggest replacement.
The other thing to check -- are those rollers spring-loaded? If so, I
would replace the springs with new ones. You want a little more tension
in order to force the roller into the paper and create more traction.
FWIW, I've seem great spring assortments at some of the better hardware
stores. They usually keep them in those drawers where they stock the
specialty fasteners.
As a guy who keeps several older printers in operation (in my case HP
LaserJet 4050's), I've gotten fairly good at printer maintenance and
repair. But, in the case of the 4050's, even though they were sold over
20 years ago, they are still popular and parts are still available. I
don't know whether Imagewriter II parts are still available or not.

I did use isopropyl alcohol to clean them earlier today. I just reached in and felt the rollers, not tacky, not cracked but dry and smooth.
I bought this... Sprayway Rubber Cleaner and Rejuvenator as the problem it seems to solve might just be the one I am having...

You could probably add a teaspoon of liquid laundry detergent to the mix, too, to help clean it at the same time.
