I have a copy that runs fine in GSPort but crashes on the title screen on my real //e enhanced. All the other AW versions run fine on the //e, including 4.0. Perhaps 5.1 needs more than 128K?

I think you are right. It seems to be confirmed here:

That's right. In the Appleworks 5 Delta Manual it says:

"Hardware and Compatibility

This new version of AppleWorks needs extra computing power. Please be sure that you have the right hardware to use AppleWorks before continuing.

Requirements

To use AppleWorks 5, you must have at least

• an enhanced Apple lie.
• 256K of expansion memory, and
• a 3.5" disk drive."

The manual is on asimov at: ftp.apple.asimov.net/documentation/applications/appleworks/A ppleWorks5DeltaManualOCRPlus.pdf

It also says this:

"Some parts of AppleWorks 5 use double hi-res graphics ... the new data base picture-browsing command, for example, and most of the AfterWork screen saver modules. Some very old Apple IIe computers are not capable of displaying double hi-res graphics properly. If you bought your computer in 1983, it may have a motherboard that doesn't support double hi-res graphics. This problem cannot be fixed with an enhancement kit. Even if your Apple IIe cannot display double
hi-res properly, you,may still use most parts of AppleWorks."

and this:

"Apple IIe computers usually come with either 64K or 128K of memory. You'll need 256K to run AppleWorks 5. AppleWorks recognizes both memory cards that fit into the auxiliary slot and those that fit into the seven conventional slots. However, if you have an expansion card that fits into a conventional slot, you must have an extended 80-column card in the auxiliary slot (for a total of 128K in the computer, without the expanded memory card)."

Oh my bad ... I attached the 800K image to the slot 6 controller in GSPort, and it should be slot 5. Nevermind.

Bobbi,

While the manuals state that 256kB is required, within AppleWorks 5.1
there is an actual message that *should* be presented when memory is
insufficient:

"APPLEWORKS REQUIRES 192K"

For the curious, here's that code:
(Thanks to Ewen Wannop's BrkDown Disassembler, of course)

28B4 **---------------------------------------------------------- ----
28B4 *Code Starts Here - $48B4
28B4 **---------------------------------------------------------- ----
28B4 0038B4: 8D 51 C0 STA TXTSET
28B7 0038B7: 8D 56 C0 STA $C056
28BA 0038BA: 8D 5F C0 STA $C05F
28BD 0038BD: AD 98 BF LDA MachID
28C0 0038C0: 29 D2 AND #$D2 ;%11010010
28C2 0038C2: C9 92 CMP #$92 ;%10010010{IIe/c|128k|80col}
28C4 0038C4: F0 11 BEQ $38D7 ; {+11}
28C6 **---------------------------------------------------------- ----
28C6 0038C6: AC A7 2F LDY $2FA7 ;'APPLEWORKS REQUIRES 192K'
28C9 **---------------------------------------------------------- ----
28C9 0038C9: B9 A7 2F LDA $2FA7,y
28CC 0038CC: 29 3F AND #$3F
28CE 0038CE: 99 D0 05 STA $05D0,y
28D1 0038D1: 88 DEY
28D2 0038D2: D0 F5 BNE $38C9 ; {-0B}
28D4 **---------------------------------------------------------- ----
28D4 0038D4: 4C D4 38 JMP $38D4 ;Hangs - Require Re-Boot
************************************************************ *************

Unfortunately, the MachID byte at $BF98 does NOT record whether memory
in excess of 128K is present, and the branch at $38C4 will be taken on a
128kB machine, instead of presenting the 192kB message and requiring a
re-boot.

FWIW, if one has gone to the trouble to have 192kB in your IIe, they've
probably got at least 256kB already, because I'm not sure if you could
even buy a RamWorks or RamFactor with just 64kB, but maybe I'm wrong.

You could buy a Ramworks with 64k but as far as I know the Ramfactor only sold with 256k or more.
Lots of reasons why someone might buy a Ramworks with 64k but the Ramfactor was mostly a RAMdisk and 64k RAMdisks aren't too versatile.
