I keep getting an Image/Drive Size mismatch when I try to copy over Total Replay using ADTPro. Is anyone else getting this error with ADTPro? Other hard drive images seem to work just fine.

I'm using a SCSI card and a real hard drive on an Apple IIgs. I'm using an Uthernet card to move things over.

As mentioned on Facebook where you posted the same question - that means
the size of your image does not match (block for block) the size of your
destination drive. If the image is ProDOS in nature, and the size of
the image is smaller than your destination drive, it shouldn't matter a
whole lot.

Different people frequent FB and the newsgroups, that's why I posted in both.

They're the exact same size though (32MB). Unless there's something screwy with the TR image. I can push out other hard drive images without issues, it's just this one.

A ProDOS 32MB disk = 65535 blocks
Total Replay = 65532 blocks (don't ask me why!)

Ah. Could that be causing my problems? Can someone add the 3 blocks to fix that or tell me how to do that? It won't boot at all when I try.

I used CiderPress to convert the image to ".po" then I used a hexadecimal editor adding $00 to the end until the desired size was reached.

Two approaches with CiderPress alone:

(1) Use the volume copier. New > Disk Image, select ProDOS and 32MB (65535 blocks), save as new.po. Close that, then Tools > Volume Copier (open file), and select new.po. Click the volume and then "load from file", and select the Total Recall image. When it warns you about wasted space, click OK.. You'll end up with a 65535-block file with a 65532-block image inside.

(2) Use the file copier. Open the image and Ctrl+A/Ctrl+C the files. Create a new image of the correct size, and Ctrl+V to paste them in. (Only recommended for 100% standard ProDOS images, e.g. no DOS MASTER volumes.)

With the image open, Ctrl+I will show you how many blocks the image has, and whether there's any waste space in the image file.

I should mention: if you use this option, make sure you have "strip pathnames when pasting files" unchecked in Preferences, or use Edit > Paste Special to ensure pathnames are preserved. Otherwise you'll immediately get a complaint about the volume directory being full.

I was able to transfer the file now without an error, but it still won't boot. Is there something special I need to do or can you not boot from that partition?

I tried to browse over to the partition using ProDOS but it seems to skip that partition like it's not there. Is there something with this Total Replay partition that doesn't work on a real hard drive with a SCSI card?

It should boot with the LAUNCHER.SYSTEM program. But since it isn't
recognized on your system, either it didn't transfer successfully (which
would be unusual, since you only need the first few blocks to be good
for it to "appear" OK as a ProDOS volume) or there's something else
wrong. Can you re-format your SCSI partition and ensure it's showing up
as good and has the right number of blocks when blank, and then re-try
transferring?

What's the best utility for formatting the hard drive?

Success.... maybe?

I reformatted the hard drive using the Advanced Disk Utilities. Now when I transfer the TR image over it actually shows up when I try and select the volume from the ProDos launcher. I can even run the program if I select the launcher.system. However it still refuses to BOOT from that partition. If I try it just sits there and hangs like it can't figure out what it is. The really odd thing is that if I run the launcher.system once and then do a warm restart it will boot the image. It just refuses to do it from a cold start. Any ideas?

Well if I put it on the second partition and then browse over to it, select the launcher, then it works. I guess that will have to do.

Another weird thing I'm seeing. I downloaded the TR image from archive.org and when I start it up it says there are 152 games on it. But Alex Lee over on his website says that there should be 203 games on it. Any idea?

TR auto-detects what the machine is capable of using and filters it down. So,
if a game requires 128K and you launch it on a machine without 128K, the game
will be hidden. You are probably seeing a filtered list. I think it can also
check if a joystick is present, so if you don't have a joystick plugged in,
that might filter it down as well.

One idea is to check the order of the files in your root directory. Prodos runs the first .system file it sees. If the file transfer was done alphabetically instead of in the same order as the original, the system file that needs to be run first may be later in the CATALOG list.

Kind of the same as the first idea, applesoft may not be getting initialized from a cold start which may require some zero-page variables to be set before the 2nd .system file or startup file is launched. A warm restart would mean applesoft was already initialized.

It has it's own bootloader and doesn't use prodos, so any copy that doesn't do blocks won't work. Alternatively, you can format as prodos, add the prodos file, and then copy the contents of the disk image as files. If launcher.system is first in the directory it will work.

Another option is starting from another prodos partition and switching to it from there.

I would argue that it is very bad for a program to assume this. Something
like this should be in a program that needs BASIC initialized:

invec = $38
bascold = $E000
init = $FB2F
home = $FC58
cout = $FDED
setnorm = $FE84
setkbd = $FE93
setvid = $FE89

entry: lda bascold
cmp #$4C
beq isfp
ldy #$00
@1: lda msg, y
beq @2
eor #$80
jsr cout
iny
bne @1
@2: jmp @2 ; ALWAYS
msg: .byte 13, 13, "APPLESOFT REQUIRED", 7, 0

isfp: lda #<reentry
sta invec
lda #>reentry
sta invec+1
jmp bascold

reentry: jsr setnorm
jsr init
jsr setvid
jsr setkbd
jsr home

.
.
.

(Disclaimer: This is mostly typed off memory)

I'm running it on a IIgs with a Joystick, so I'm not sure what it would be filtering out. I'll have to try it on my IIe and see if that goes up to 203.

I was more trying to get to the point that something is not getting initialized. Maybe some location from Basic being one of them. No need to argue. :)

Someone posted an image over on Facebook that works for me. The one I was using must have been damaged somehow.

Is there a way to exit Total Replay and get back to Prodos so I can browse over to other partitions?

@Tempest, well I don't think there is any 'exit to ProDOS'. Total Replay does not include a full ProDOS so it can't exit to anything. You need to load a usable image of ProDOS, which means you need to reboot the machine.

Great. I got around this by just not making it the first partition on my hard drive.

BTW when in Basic, is there a way to boot a specific partition on a hard drive? PR#7 (my card is in 7) boots to the first partition. Is there a way to select the second partition instead?

Not directly, no. It's what you were doing already:
enter Bitsy Bye, Tab to the partition, run the .SYSTEM file.

Based on the Pitch Dark thread, Total Replay is affected by the same "only runs from the first partition on SCSI" problem.
I will work out how to fix that.

Hmm... I wonder which games have that problem? I tried a few different ones (including 128K games like Airheart) and they seemed to work ok. Of course I haven't tried more than a handful of the 203 so I probably just haven't found one.

Oh, well that's *very* interesting. So I might have fixed something in Total Replay as a side-effect of something else...
Okay, now I get to study the two versions line-by-line to work out what happened.

I can do more testing tomorrow for you. The only thing I've noticed not working in Total Replay are the screenshots for the 128K DHRG games like Airheart. When you get to one of those games the screenshot area is empty and I think it says something like "Press Tab for more Screenshots", but if you do it either hangs or crashes.

152 is the number of games I get offered on my Enhanced //e too (I have the 65C02.)

I also do not see Choplifter in the LAUNCHER.SYSTEM selection. So it seems what you are seeing is consistent with an Enhanced //e.

That's weird, you should see 203. I saw 152 on my IIgs and assumed it was due to it not being a true 6502 variant. When I tried it in my enhanced IIe I saw 203.

Very strange. I wonder what that is all about. I see 203 under GSPort (don't have a real GS.)

There's code that attempts to tell if a joystick is connected. Some games won't show up if they're in the TR database as requiring a joystick.

That would explain it. No joystick or paddles on this machine. However now Total Replay makes it so easy to play all these games I may have to find myself a joystick. Would be good for Sublogic FS2 if nothing else!

The weird thing is I did have a joystick hooked up to my IIgs. Maybe it wasn't being detected somehow?

Oh yeah, I'm now getting 203 games with a joystick hooked up to my IIe card... Thanks!

The two things that reduce the count of available games are joystick present or not, and 128kb vs 64kb.
It's 203 games with both joystick and 128kb.
It's 183 games with joystick but only 64kb.
It's 152 games with no joystick but 128kb.
It's 139 games with no joystick and only 64kb.

So yes, your joystick was not detected.
Can you confirm that your joystick works if you boot, say, Choplifter manually? If so, then we have a detection issue that we need to fix.
